Tourism in the Maldives has reached a new high, as the country welcomed its one millionth tourist of 2025 on 7th June, marking the fastest arrival at this figure in the nation’s history. The milestone underscores the country’s accelerating appeal as a premier global destination, driven by strategic marketing efforts, enhanced global presence, and a renewed commitment to sustainable tourism development.
The one millionth visitor, Kajal Singh, an Indian national, arrived at Velana International Airport at 12:55 PM aboard IndiGo flight 6E 1131. On her honeymoon and visiting the Maldives for the first time, Kajal is staying at Malahini Kuda Bandos, a serene island resort known for its tranquil atmosphere and vibrant marine life.
To commemorate this occasion, Visit Maldives, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Environment and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), organized a special ceremony at Velana International Airport. The event celebrated not just the arrival of the milestone visitor but also the collective efforts of tourism stakeholders whose dedication continues to fuel the Maldives’ global tourism success.
Hon. Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister for Tourism and Environment, remarked:
“This milestone fills us with immense pride, reflecting the successful culmination of our destination marketing initiatives that showcase the true essence of the Maldivian experience. Welcoming one million tourists with such unprecedented speed is a powerful indicator of our global appeal, and I extend my sincere appreciation to all the hardworking individuals across the tourism sector whose dedication made this achievement possible.”
In a symbolic and environmentally conscious gesture, Kajal Singh was invited to take part in the national “Five Million Trees Planting Program”, a green initiative spearheaded by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. She planted a tree on Hulhulé Island, contributing to the country’s long-term efforts to combat climate change, improve biodiversity, and create a sustainable and greener future for generations to come.
Mr. Ibrahim Shiuree, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), emphasized the broader significance of the occasion:
“This achievement is a clear indicator that we are well on our way to attaining H.E President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s national tourist arrival target of 2.3 million for this year. We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone with all our stakeholders, whose dedication and hard work are invaluable. Our commitment doesn’t end here; we are continually working to enhance the Maldives’ tourism industry and ensure the Sunny Side of Life remains a dream destination for everyone.”
The milestone comes on the heels of the Maldives’ successful participation in Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025, where the destination garnered attention from international travel trade professionals through an immersive showcase of its tourism offerings. This momentum has been further supported by MMPRC’s multi-market Summer Campaign, targeting core regions in Europe, the Middle East, and other key global markets. These efforts are aimed at boosting off-peak and winter bookings, ensuring a steady stream of arrivals throughout the year.
MMPRC’s strategic approach, involving high-impact global campaigns, targeted outreach, and strong industry partnerships, continues to strengthen the Maldives’ position as a top-tier, year-round holiday destination. The consistent growth in tourist arrivals reflects both visitor confidence and the international appeal of the Maldives’ diverse experiences, ranging from luxury resorts and underwater adventures to cultural heritage and eco-conscious travel.
With the early arrival of its one millionth visitor, the Maldives reinforces its reputation as a destination of choice for travelers seeking relaxation, romance, and natural beauty, all anchored in a framework of sustainability and authentic island hospitality.
