Banyan Group has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, One Banyan, One Sustainable Future, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to responsible tourism and its founding belief that travel can serve as a catalyst for positive change. Now in its 19th edition, the report details the Group’s measurable progress across environmental, social, and economic pillars, offering transparency and accountability in its global operations, including its key conservation efforts in the Maldives.

A cornerstone achievement highlighted in the report is the expansion of the Our Marine Lab in the Maldives. This facility, central to Banyan Group’s marine conservation mission, has been instrumental in furthering scientific research and environmental stewardship across the region. In 2024, the Group also launched the Coral Reef Restoration Project in partnership with the China Environmental Protection Foundation (CEPF), reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding marine biodiversity around island nations like the Maldives.

Environmental sustainability remains at the forefront of Banyan Group’s operations. Focused investments in infrastructure upgrades have contributed to a 5.7% reduction in carbon emissions intensity per occupied room compared to 2023. These upgrades include energy-efficient lighting systems, advanced room control units, air-conditioning systems, and the installation of on-site solar panels and timer-controlled systems to optimize energy use across the Group’s properties.
Equally noteworthy is the Group’s effort to manage waste and protect local ecosystems. In 2024, 28% of total waste produced across its resorts and hotels was diverted from landfills, up from 23% in 2023, through a combination of food donation programs, composting, and upcycling initiatives. These practices help reduce the environmental footprint of resort operations, particularly in fragile island settings like the Maldives.
Water conservation also saw marked progress. By undertaking infrastructure repairs, improving leak detection, enhancing storage systems, and implementing water reuse measures, Banyan Group achieved a 5.1% improvement in water efficiency per occupied room year-over-year. These efforts are particularly critical in island environments where freshwater resources are limited.
Social responsibility continues to be a key pillar of Banyan Group’s sustainability journey. Through its Seedlings mentorship and training program, the Group empowered 93 youths in 2024, while offering 2,515 internship opportunities across its global operations. In an effort to promote inclusive economic development and cultural preservation, Banyan Group expanded its artisan network by partnering with 306 community-based production groups, including 66 newly engaged artisan collectives. This initiative supports traditional crafts and local economies while enhancing the cultural identity of each destination.
To mark its 30th anniversary in 2024, Banyan Group introduced the Greater Good Grants through its Banyan Global Foundation. This special initiative funded 30 associate-led projects across the Group’s properties, each aligned with the Group’s sustainability priorities. The selected projects focused on delivering long-term environmental, social, welfare, and financial benefits to local communities, including those in the Maldives where tourism plays a major economic role.
Ho Ren Yung, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Banyan Group, emphasized the strategic direction behind the report: “Sustainability is a cornerstone of Banyan Group’s purpose, and our journey will continue to evolve as we look to scale increasingly impactful practices in the upcoming years, with more ambitious climate action, deeper community engagement, and greater support for our associates to take action.”
To further operationalize its sustainability goals, the Group has introduced performance metrics tied to its material sustainability issues for senior-level associates in both front-line and corporate roles. This approach is intended to embed responsible practices across all levels of operation and ensure accountability moving forward.
