The inclusion of the Maldives in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s prestigious Makkah Route Initiative has been described as a powerful reflection of the close and evolving diplomatic ties between the two nations. Maldivian Ambassador to Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, H.E. Ahmed Sareer, stated that the decision represents a major achievement in bilateral cooperation, highlighting Saudi Arabia’s recognition of the Maldives as a valued partner in the Islamic world.
The Makkah Route Initiative, which simplifies and enhances the Hajj travel process by allowing pilgrims to complete Saudi immigration, customs, and health procedures at the point of departure, is typically reserved for countries sending 20,000 or more pilgrims annually. However, through a special arrangement, the Maldives, despite its smaller Hajj contingent, was granted access to the program. This exception was made without a formal agreement, underscoring the strong mutual trust and respect shared between Malé and Riyadh.
Ambassador Sareer, who welcomed the first group of Maldivian pilgrims benefiting from the initiative upon their arrival in Jeddah, praised the quality of services provided under the new arrangement. He noted that Maldivian pilgrims expressed high levels of satisfaction with the streamlined travel process and the logistical support extended to them. The swift and efficient implementation of the initiative, he said, stands as evidence of the strong institutional coordination and enduring friendship between the two governments.
Saudi immigration authorities had previously noted that the Makkah Route Initiative is generally offered only to countries with robust logistical infrastructures capable of managing high volumes of international travel. In earlier discussions, Maldivian officials presented a well-documented track record of managing Hajj operations with precision and professionalism—an effort that played a key role in securing the Maldives’ eligibility for this facilitation.
Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed described the inclusion as a “privilege” for the Maldives, emphasizing that the decision reflects Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting smaller Muslim-majority nations with well-managed religious affairs. He highlighted the strategic importance of this development, not only in terms of service delivery for pilgrims but also as a strong symbol of the trust placed in Maldivian institutions by Saudi authorities.
The Makkah Route Initiative is a core element of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which aims to modernize public services, improve the pilgrim experience, and support the Kingdom’s economic diversification goals. For Maldivian pilgrims, the program’s benefits are immediate and tangible: pre-departure clearance at Velana International Airport eliminates long queues upon arrival in Jeddah and allows for direct transfer to accommodations in Makkah, enhancing both comfort and spiritual focus.
This year, a total of 1,000 Maldivians are expected to undertake the Hajj pilgrimage. The first flight, carrying 234 pilgrims, departed Malé on 26th May 2025, Monday under the new arrangements, marking a new chapter in Maldives-Saudi Arabia relations and reinforcing a shared vision for excellence in serving the needs of the Muslim Ummah.
