In a continued display of friendship and cooperation, the Government of the People’s Republic of China has donated a wide range of sports equipment to the Maldives, further solidifying the strong partnership between the two nations in the field of sports development.
At a special handover ceremony attended by Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu and the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, H.E. Kong Xianhua, the Ministry of Sports officially received the donation from the People’s Government of Yunnan Province. The equipment package includes an impressive array of items designed to enhance athletic training and recreational activities throughout the country.
Among the donated items are 400 footballs, 60 hurdles, 60 starting blocks, 60 manual timekeeping devices, 60 table tennis tables, 20 scoreboards, 300 table tennis rackets, 1,500 table tennis balls, and eight judges’ chairs. The donation supports a variety of sports disciplines, including football, athletics, and table tennis, and is expected to significantly benefit both grassroots and professional-level development.
Minister Rafiu expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Chinese government for its ongoing contributions to the advancement of the Maldives’ sports sector. He highlighted not only the donation of equipment but also China’s support in training athletes and officials, as well as its assistance in enhancing sports infrastructure across the country. The Minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to working closely with China to nurture and develop local athletic talent.
In an official statement, the Ministry underscored that such initiatives are crucial to promoting physical activity and youth engagement in sports while fostering healthy, active communities nationwide. The donation reflects China’s recognition of the Maldives’ efforts in elevating its sports landscape and demonstrates a shared commitment to deepening cooperation in this vital sector.
