His Excellency Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef highlighted the Maldives’ unwavering dedication to advancing clean energy and addressing the climate crisis, as he attended the opening ceremony of the Blue Planet Alliance (BPA) Fellowship Programme as a special guest.

Held from 19 to 23 May 2025, the Fellowship Programme gathers global experts, utility leaders, civil society representatives, and sustainability advocates to explore practical solutions for renewable energy implementation, particularly in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). This year marks the fourth cohort of the programme, hosted in Hawaii, with participants from various island nations, including a delegation from the Maldives comprising senior government officials and civil society leaders.
In his remarks, Vice President Latheef called for bold thinking and innovative approaches beyond conventional frameworks to address the growing threats of climate change. He underscored the lived experience of climate vulnerability in small island states like the Maldives, where rising sea levels and environmental stressors are not distant projections but daily realities.
The Vice President reaffirmed the Maldives’ role as a regional leader in sustainable development. He pointed to the launch of the country’s Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and the Energy Roadmap 2024–2033, which outlines a targeted shift to renewable energy. The roadmap sets an ambitious goal: generating 33% of the nation’s electricity from renewable sources by 2028, a key component of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s broader agenda to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote climate resilience.
Highlighting the strategic importance of collaboration, the Vice President commended the BPA Fellowship as a platform that empowers SIDS to exchange ideas, design context-specific solutions, and access the tools necessary to accelerate their energy transitions. He urged fellows to look beyond technological solutions and embrace innovative policy frameworks and financing mechanisms capable of transforming local communities and influencing the global climate agenda.

The Blue Planet Alliance continues to support island nations by building technical capacity, facilitating knowledge exchange, and connecting stakeholders with financial institutions to catalyze investment in sustainable energy infrastructure. The Maldives’ participation in the Fellowship Programme not only strengthens its international partnerships but also reinforces its standing as a proactive advocate for clean energy and environmental sustainability on the global stage.
With initiatives like these, the Maldives remains committed to shaping a cleaner, more resilient future, not just for its own islands, but for all communities confronting the climate crisis.
