In a first for the Maldivian tourism and hospitality sector, Ooredoo Maldives has launched a national eSports tournament exclusively for resort teams, bringing a fresh wave of digital entertainment to resort employees. The Ooredoo Nation Inter-Resort eSports Championship 2025 will take place this weekend, on 2025 May 9th and 10th, marking a new chapter in recreational engagement for the Maldives’ island workforce.
Sixteen teams from ten resorts are set to compete in two of the most widely played mobile gaming titles: Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) and PUBG Mobile (PUBGM). This championship is not only a milestone for the local eSports community, but also a pioneering initiative to bridge the gap between technology and hospitality, providing resort staff, many based on remote islands, an opportunity to connect, compete, and showcase their gaming talents.
The MLBB segment of the tournament will adopt a single-elimination format. Semifinals will be held on Friday evening, followed by the third-place match and grand final on Saturday. Simultaneously, the PUBGM competition will run in a Battle Royale format with twelve matches evenly split over the two-day period, six matches on Friday and six on Saturday.
Ooredoo Maldives has allocated a prize pool of MVR 10,000 to recognize the top performers. The winning team will walk away with MVR 5,000, while the second and third-place teams will receive MVR 3,000 and MVR 2,000 respectively. All matches will be broadcast live on Ooredoo Nation’s YouTube channel, enabling fans and resort colleagues across the archipelago to support their teams in real time.
This initiative is part of Ooredoo Nation’s ongoing efforts to promote digital inclusion and build a vibrant gaming community that reaches beyond the urban population. By integrating technology into leisure activities within the tourism sector, the program reinforces Ooredoo’s vision to create meaningful and inclusive digital experiences throughout the Maldives.
