President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to addressing challenges faced by online businesses in the Maldives, while also assuring that concerns affecting persons with disabilities will be taken up with the relevant government authorities.
Speaking during the latest edition of the “Rayyithunge Adu” programme, President Muizzu responded to concerns raised by members of the public regarding difficulties experienced when ordering goods through international e-commerce platform Temu. The issue is particularly important for Maldivian entrepreneurs and small businesses that depend on overseas online platforms to source products for resale and business operations.
Responding to the concern, President Muizzu said he is working continuously to identify practical solutions to difficulties affecting online businesses and assured that the Government would work towards addressing the matter. Facilitating smoother access to international e-commerce services is expected to support the growing number of Maldivians engaged in digital commerce, home-based businesses and small-scale retail activities.
The programme also provided an opportunity for a visually impaired participant to raise accessibility concerns directly with the President. Among the issues highlighted were difficulties in identifying the direction of the qiblah in mosques and challenges faced while using RTL public bus services, particularly in determining which bus stop the vehicle is approaching.
The participant requested the introduction of an accessible announcement or information system inside buses that would allow visually impaired passengers to independently identify upcoming stops. Such a system would further strengthen accessibility within the country’s public transport network and provide greater independence and convenience for persons with visual impairments.
Attention was also drawn to the design of Boduthakurufaanu Magu in Malé, which the participant described as convenient for persons with disabilities. He requested the Government to consider similar accessibility-focused designs when developing or redesigning other roads across the country. President Muizzu assured that the concerns would be reviewed and efforts would be made to address them through the relevant institutions.
The “Rayyithunge Adu” programme has become an important platform for citizens to communicate their concerns directly to the President. A total of nine sessions have been held so far, providing 101 individuals with the opportunity to raise issues personally with President Muizzu.
The President has repeatedly stated that concerns raised through the programme will be followed up in coordination with the relevant ministries and government agencies, reflecting the Administration’s focus on responsive governance, inclusive public services and practical solutions to issues affecting communities across the Maldives.
