The Maldives celebrated a new chapter in regional air travel with the successful test landing at the newly developed Muli Airport in Meemu Atoll. The arrival of a Dash-8 aircraft operated by the national carrier, Maldivian, on Friday marked the completion of the long-awaited project, offering a new gateway for both residents and tourists eager to experience the central atoll’s charm.
Located on Muli Island, the capital of Meemu Atoll, the airport features a 1,200-metre-long and 30-metre-wide runway, equipped with modern facilities to support domestic air travel. Developed over three years by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the project was completed at a cost of MVR 221 million. Additionally, 36 hectares of land were reclaimed to accommodate the runway, terminal building, and supporting infrastructure.
The completion of Muli Airport reflects the government’s commitment under the leadership of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to strengthening connectivity across the Maldives. The President is expected to officially inaugurate the airport in the coming days, further underscoring the administration’s efforts to enhance transportation networks and create new economic opportunities in the atolls.
As the first test flight touched down, residents of Meemu Atoll welcomed the achievement with vibrant traditional performances, celebrating the beginning of a new era that promises to transform travel and trade across the region. With direct access now available, visitors will find it easier than ever to discover the pristine beauty, rich culture, and authentic island life that Meemu Atoll offers.
Muli Airport is set to play a vital role in boosting tourism, opening up the atoll’s breathtaking islands to a wider audience of domestic and international travellers. Its completion stands as a symbol of the Maldives’ continued progress in expanding its world-renowned hospitality industry and making the wonders of its remote islands more accessible to all.
