Maldivian businesses will soon have a unique opportunity to showcase their products on an international platform, as the Maldives prepares to participate in the 9th China–South Asia Expo (CSA Expo), scheduled for June 2025 in Kunming, China. Organized by the Ministry of Commerce of China and the Yunnan Provincial People’s Government, with support from South Asian commercial authorities, the event stands as the region’s largest trade fair dedicated to strengthening commercial ties between China and South Asia.

Since its inception in 2013, the CSA Expo has grown into a dynamic hub for trade, tourism, and cultural cooperation, drawing over 20,000 companies from more than 80 countries and regions. With over 4.5 million visitors and upwards of 3,000 projects signed across past editions, the event serves as a high-profile platform for business promotion and international networking.

This year’s participation by the Maldives comes at a time of strengthened economic collaboration with China, following the activation of the China–Maldives Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on January 1, 2025. The FTA introduces a host of advantages for Maldivian industries, including reduced tariffs on fisheries, construction materials, and creative industry products, along with duty-free access for key imports and machinery. These measures are designed to promote economic diversification and boost the Maldives’ export potential.

With the Expo’s theme, “Solidarity and Coordination for Common Development” Maldivian exhibitors will join a regional effort to deepen commercial and cultural relationships. Participating businesses will not only gain exposure for their products but also access opportunities in investment, procurement, and supply chain engagement.

Senior Policy Officer at the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, Musthafa Abdul Gafoor, emphasized the importance of the CSA Expo as a gateway to new markets. He described the event as a vital avenue for regional economic integration, where companies connect with buyers, investors, and strategic partners through business forums and networking sessions.

Notably, the 2025 Expo will welcome participation from Maldivians residing overseas, allowing them to represent Maldivian-made goods produced abroad. This marks a step forward in expanding the global reach of the country’s entrepreneurial efforts.

The FTA is expected to lower the cost of imports for Maldivian consumers, improve access to quality goods, and enhance export volumes. Trade between the two nations, which currently stands at around USD 700 million annually, is projected to surpass USD 1 billion in the coming years. Moreover, sectors such as architecture, healthcare, and education are expected to benefit from the broader service market access provided under the agreement.

The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has pledged its full support to applicants, guiding them through registration and coordinating directly with Chinese organizers to streamline participation. Businesses interested in exhibiting at the CSA Expo are encouraged to submit their applications to [email protected] by April 14, 2025. Booths will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, depending on availability.

Through this engagement, the Maldives continues to extend its presence in the global marketplace, opening doors for innovation, collaboration, and long-term economic growth.
