The Maldives is set to host its first Liverpool Football Club Academy by the year 2028, marking a new chapter in the country’s sporting landscape and further enriching its global tourism appeal. This exciting development stems from ongoing discussions between the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation and representatives of Liverpool FC, following a proposal by the Liverpool International Academy.

Speaking to MMTV, Minister Abdulla Rafiu confirmed that talks with club officials have been positive, with a shared vision to foster young football talent in the Maldives. The project is anticipated to inspire widespread interest among aspiring athletes and sports enthusiasts across the islands.

The initiative is closely linked to a broader collaboration between the Maldives and Liverpool FC, formalized under a partnership between the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) and the football club. Through this alliance, the Maldives is promoted as Liverpool FC’s official tourism destination partner, further reinforcing its position as a vibrant hub for world-class leisure and sports experiences.

During a recent official visit to the United Kingdom alongside President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Minister Rafiu met with Liverpool officials to discuss the academy’s framework. The discussions focused on the Maldives’ current sports infrastructure and the basic requirements for establishing a successful training institution. According to the Minister, one of the first steps in the initiative will include a visit from a Liverpool-appointed coach who will train local trainers. Importantly, participation in the program will be open to all, without the need for a prior coaching license.

Minister Rafiu emphasized that implementation of the academy and other agreements from the UK visit will commence shortly, with full operations expected within the next three years.

This new venture is not only an investment in youth development and athletic excellence but also a powerful addition to the Maldives’ tourism profile. By hosting a globally respected football academy, the Maldives strengthens its international reputation as a destination that offers more than sun and sea, delivering unique cultural, recreational, and educational experiences for visitors and locals alike.
