In a key development aimed at enhancing safety across all modes of travel in the Maldives, His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has formally established the Maldives Transportation Safety Board. The Board, which officially began operations on 8 April 2025, will function under the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation. This initiative comes as part of the government’s broader efforts to ensure the safety and reliability of the country’s land, sea, and air transport systems.
The announcement was made through Directive No. 7/2025 issued by the President’s Office, in accordance with Section 116 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives. The newly established Board is mandated to conduct independent investigations into transportation-related incidents and accidents, serving as an authoritative body focused on identifying causes, preventing future occurrences, and maintaining high safety standards across the nation’s travel infrastructure.
The Maldives, known for its scattered islands and reliance on both maritime and aviation travel, welcomes millions of tourists each year. Ensuring a dependable and secure transport network is not only vital for the well-being of locals but also plays a critical role in maintaining the country’s reputation as a world-class travel destination. The creation of a specialized safety oversight body demonstrates the government’s proactive approach to travel safety and its commitment to preserving the trust of international visitors.
Under the directive, the Maldives Transportation Safety Board has been assigned the unique identifier 501 for official state agency correspondence. This marks its inclusion within the national administrative framework and facilitates streamlined communication with other government institutions.
The introduction of this Board is expected to bring more transparency and professionalism to the handling of transport safety matters and contribute to ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and service quality in the Maldives. For tourists arriving by sea planes, domestic flights, ferries, or taxis, this development adds an extra layer of assurance that safety remains a top priority in the Maldives’ tourism experience.
