At the 4th Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Parliamentary Network, held alongside the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, the Speaker of the Maldives Parliament, Honorable Abdul Raheem Abdulla, has delivered his address. Representing the island nation, the Speaker stressed the critical need for global cooperation founded on mutual respect, non-interference, and peaceful conflict resolution.
The conference, attended by parliamentary leaders from around the world, centered on the theme “Commemorating 70 Years of the Bandung Spirit: The Role of Parliaments in Upholding the Bandung Principles.” Speaker Abdul Raheem reaffirmed the Maldives’ longstanding commitment to these foundational values. Originating from the historic 1955 Bandung Conference, these principles have shaped decades of diplomatic engagement among developing countries and continue to provide guidance for building trust and unity across borders.

The Speaker emphasized that today’s world faces a complex web of challenges, from political unrest to intensifying global conflicts, that threaten peace and hinder development. He noted that the Bandung Spirit, rooted in respect for sovereignty, peaceful coexistence, and cultural cooperation, remains more relevant than ever in navigating the uncertainties of today’s international landscape.
Highlighting the Maldives’ proactive role in advocating for these ideals, Speaker Abdul Raheem called on fellow NAM member states to reinforce parliamentary dialogue and shared responsibility in turning these principles into concrete legislative outcomes that benefit their citizens. He particularly emphasized the duty of parliamentarians to safeguard justice, fairness, and inclusivity within their nations.
A strong voice for the concerns of small island nations, the Speaker also addressed the severe climate vulnerabilities faced by countries like the Maldives. He called for unified climate action within the Global South, urging NAM member states to prioritize environmental justice and ensure that the countries most affected by climate change receive meaningful support. His message underscored the Maldives’ urgent call for responsible global leadership in mitigating environmental harm and protecting future generations.
In reflecting on the Maldives’ national progress, the Speaker shared insights into key legislative initiatives that reflect the country’s dedication to democratic values and inclusive development. He cited the Social Security Act and the Decentralisation Act as central efforts in empowering communities, enhancing public services, and fostering equitable growth. He further highlighted the ongoing work of Parliamentary Committees in upholding human rights, protecting heritage, and promoting gender equality.
The Speaker concluded with a heartfelt appeal to all NAM nations to recommit to the spirit of Bandung, emphasizing unity, dialogue, and collective purpose. His message from Tashkent served as a reminder of the Maldives’ continued dedication to peace, sovereignty, and cooperation, values that resonate deeply with international travellers seeking not just stunning landscapes, but also a nation with a strong global conscience and active participation in shaping a fairer world.
