Addu City Council has announced a major opportunity for investors interested in contributing to the expansion of the Maldives’ tourism sector, with the launch of a bid process to develop a new tourist facility on the picturesque Savaahili Island. The island, located between Feydhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo in Addu City, is now open for lease and development under a long-term investment plan aimed at enhancing the region’s tourism infrastructure.

Covering an expansive 79,753.74 square meters (approximately 858,462.11 square feet), the designated site includes both land and lagoon areas. The council is inviting qualified local and international investors to submit proposals for the development, operation, and management of a multi-functional tourist facility that will serve as a key support hub for the surrounding tourism industry. The lease period for the development extends up to 50 years, in accordance with Section 8 of the Maldives Tourism Act (Law No. 2/99).

The proposed facility must feature a minimum of 10 guest rooms, along with a variety of tourism-focused amenities. These include a restaurant, a bar, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, a water sports center, a spa and wellness center, and a shared swimming pool. The facility is expected to provide comprehensive services not only to its own guests but also to nearby resorts, tourist hotels, guesthouses, and other tourism-related businesses operating within Addu City.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in Addu City Council’s broader strategy to attract private investment and elevate the region’s appeal as a high-quality tourism destination. The council originally passed the resolution to develop Savaahili Island for tourism use in February 2021, with formal approval granted on February 14, 2024. The current bidding invitation is part of the council’s ongoing efforts to translate these plans into tangible infrastructure and economic growth for the southernmost atoll of the Maldives.

Interested parties may inspect and purchase the bidding documents from April 9 to April 20, 2025, between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., at the Secretariat of Addu City Council. Bidding documents are priced at MVR 15,000 for entities registered in the Maldives with 100% Maldivian ownership, and USD 1,000 for foreign applicants. All prospective bidders or their representatives must submit sealed bids and be present at the Secretariat by 12:50 p.m. on May 15, 2025, ahead of the bid opening session at 1:00 p.m. (Maldivian time).
