His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with senior leadership and academic representatives of the University of Leeds during his official visit to the United Kingdom on 4th April 2025, highlighting a shared interest in forging stronger academic and research partnerships between the Maldives and the internationally recognized institution. The meeting was held at the university’s main campus, where the President presented key areas of interest for long-term collaboration in support of the Maldives’ national development goals.
In the discussion, President Dr Muizzu outlined the Maldives’ current priorities, which include expanding international cooperation in education, developing high-quality academic programmes, and addressing national skills gaps. He noted that the Maldives stands to benefit from the University of Leeds’ global expertise across disciplines and expressed interest in drawing from its academic strengths to advance national capacity in higher education and research.
As the Maldives accelerates its nationwide digitalization of public services, President Dr Muizzu discussed opportunities to work together in areas such as digital health, healthcare infrastructure, and the training of allied health professionals. Special attention was given to the potential for academic collaboration between the University of Leeds and the Maldives National University, with a focus on upskilling healthcare workers in sectors currently facing shortages.
The President also expressed the Maldives’ interest in encouraging more students to pursue studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), noting that further professional development in these fields is vital for the country’s economic transformation.
Further areas of discussion included exploring technical cooperation in emerging sectors such as financial technology (fintech), green energy solutions, environmental preservation, smart cities, and research on non-communicable diseases prevalent in the Maldives. These topics reflect the Maldives’ strategic focus on sustainability, digital innovation, and public health.
