Velana International Airport (VIA), the primary international gateway to the Maldives, is expected to experience an unusually high volume of passenger movement on 04th April 2025 afternoon, according to a public advisory issued by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). The anticipated congestion is primarily due to the scheduled arrival of multiple flights carrying Maldivian Umrah pilgrims, coinciding with the airport’s regular weekend operations.
In a recent update, MACL highlighted that two inbound Umrah charter flights are expected to land at 14:00 hrs and 16:00 hrs respectively, significantly increasing the usual passenger flow. As a result, travelers using VIA are strongly encouraged to arrive at the airport well ahead of their scheduled departure times to accommodate longer check-in queues and additional time required for security screening.
To manage the increased activity both inside and outside the terminal, MACL has arranged for additional personnel to be stationed throughout the airport. These staff members will assist travellers, provide guidance, and help ensure smooth coordination across various services.
Recognizing the potential for heavy road traffic near the airport, MACL has also called on taxi drivers and transport service providers to support efforts in maintaining steady traffic circulation around the premises during peak hours.
Velana International Airport remains a critical hub for international and domestic connectivity in the Maldives, serving as the first and last point of contact for thousands of tourists each day. The efficient handling of such busy periods is key to ensuring the Maldives continues to provide a positive and seamless experience for all visitors.
