To enhance travel options for both domestic and international visitors, the national airline of the Maldives, Maldivian, has introduced a new twice-weekly seaplane service to the serene island of Fulhadhoo in Baa Atoll. Scheduled to begin on 31 March 2025, the service coincides with the Eid al-Fitr holidays, a peak travel period in the Maldives when many residents and tourists seek getaways to the outer islands.
Fulhadhoo, located in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, is renowned for its unspoiled beaches, crystal-clear lagoons, and peaceful atmosphere. The island is increasingly gaining attention among travellers seeking authentic local experiences away from the bustle of large resorts. With a variety of guesthouses and boutique accommodations, Fulhadhoo offers a budget-friendly yet immersive escape ideal for snorkeling, kayaking, and other ocean-based activities.
Maldivian’s new service will operate every Thursday and Saturday, departing from Velana International Airport, with a short 25-minute scenic flight offering passengers panoramic aerial views of the Maldives’ famed turquoise atolls. In addition to providing direct access to Fulhadhoo, the new route is expected to benefit visitors traveling to nearby islands such as Fehendhoo and Goidhoo, helping improve regional connectivity within the atoll.
The launch of the service reflects Maldivian’s ongoing strategy to accommodate the seasonal spike in domestic travel during Eid, when families and individuals traditionally travel from Malé to celebrate in their home islands or to relax in tranquil destinations. While seaplane operations have previously touched down in Fulhadhoo, the new scheduled service marks a renewed effort to support island tourism and provide more accessible options for holidaymakers.
Maldivian currently operates a fleet of 11 seaplanes, primarily catering to international tourists staying at luxury island resorts. The introduction of scheduled flights to locally inhabited islands like Fulhadhoo highlights the airline’s commitment to promoting sustainable tourism across a broader spectrum of destinations.
