The Maldives Government is set to expand its tourism offerings with new resort developments in the Haa Dhaalu and Thaa Atolls, as part of a broader effort to diversify the country’s tourism industry. This initiative, which will see the addition of resorts in these regions next month, comes in response to the growing demand for tourism infrastructure across the country. Minister of Tourism and Environment, Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim, confirmed the plans, emphasizing that these developments are critical to enhancing the sector’s growth.
Tourism has long been a cornerstone of the Maldivian economy, contributing significantly to the nation’s GDP for over fifty years. However, the sector’s development has primarily concentrated in a few atolls, leaving others with untapped potential. In response, the Government is focusing on creating specific master plans and tailored marketing strategies for each atoll to drive growth in lesser-developed areas.
Minister Ibrahim highlighted the Administration’s strong commitment to tourism development, noting that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has made tourism a key priority of his administration. In his recent address, the President outlined plans to spread tourism growth throughout the Maldives, with particular attention to underdeveloped regions.
Haa Dhaalu Atoll and Thaa Atoll, which currently host only one operational resort each, have been identified as priority areas for expansion. With the new resorts set to begin development next month, these atolls are expected to become important contributors to the country’s tourism landscape. The Government aims to increase resort capacity in these regions to create a more balanced distribution of tourism across the archipelago.
Minister Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim also emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the tourism potential in these underdeveloped atolls. By encouraging investment in these regions, the Government seeks to stimulate local economies and create job opportunities. In addition, the recent amendments to the Tourism Act are expected to facilitate the expansion by streamlining regulations and attracting more investors to the sector.
With these developments, the Maldives is positioning itself to strengthen its tourism industry while ensuring that the benefits of growth are shared more widely across its islands.
