The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has announced plans to distribute essential agricultural tools and testing kits, donated by China, to atoll and city councils. This initiative aims to bolster the nation’s agricultural capacity and improve pest control efforts at the local level.

The donation is part of an ongoing collaboration between the Maldives and China, strengthening agricultural development through technical and material support. The assistance follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on August 4, 2024, between the Maldives’ Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare and the Sichuan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Science.

The contribution, valued at approximately USD 14,576, comes from the Sichuan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, a well-regarded institution in agricultural research and rural development. The Ministry confirmed on March 17, 2025, that a total of 500 items had been received under this agreement. These include 25 sprayers for large trees, 100 test kits for soil nutrient analysis, 35 automated irrigation controllers, and 340 kits for detecting avian influenza.

Ensuring that these resources reach councils across the country is a key priority for the Ministry, which emphasized the role of these tools in enabling swift responses to pest outbreaks and other agricultural challenges. The effort is part of a broader partnership that has seen China contribute expertise and resources to Maldivian agriculture.

In December 2024, experts from the Environment and Plant Protection Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS) visited the Maldives to advance the ‘Maldives Coconut Tree Pest Control Assistance Project.’ This initiative is dedicated to mitigating the spread of the Coconut Hispine Leaf Beetle (CHLB), a significant threat to the nation’s coconut palms. As part of their work, the team conducted an assessment at the Hanimaadhoo Agriculture Centre in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, exploring the feasibility of establishing a Natural Enemy Laboratory to introduce sustainable pest management practices.

With this latest donation, the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare continues to strengthen its efforts to modernize agricultural practices and protect the Maldives’ natural resources, ensuring long-term sustainability in the sector.
