Saudi Arabia has officially registered the Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences in the Maldives, marking the first institution of its kind in South Asia. This significant milestone underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to expanding Arabic language education worldwide, in line with the directive of His Majesty King of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
The initiative stems from the King’s vision to promote Arabic language studies beyond the Arab world, leading to the establishment of a dedicated teaching center in the Maldives. Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University has been tasked with overseeing the institute’s development, ensuring its alignment with the broader academic and diplomatic goals of Saudi Arabia.
To formalize the institute’s registration, a high-level meeting was held at the Maldives’ Ministry of Higher Education, Labour, and Skills Development, attended by Dr. Abdulla Nazeer, Minister of State for Higher Education, along with Mr. Saleh bin Sulaiman Alarajah and other senior officials from both the Ministry and the newly established institute.
A statement from Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University highlighted the instrumental role of Saudi Education Minister Yusuf Bin Abdulla Al Bunyan in facilitating Arabic language education in non-Arabic-speaking, Muslim-majority nations. The President of the university emphasized that the institute would serve as a crucial bridge, strengthening academic, cultural, and diplomatic ties between Saudi Arabia and the Maldives while fostering greater international cooperation.
The launch of this institute is expected to significantly enhance educational opportunities in Islamic and Arabic studies within the Maldives, providing students with advanced academic resources and linguistic training. Beyond education, the initiative will also contribute to a deeper cultural and intellectual exchange between the two nations, further solidifying their longstanding relationship.
