The Hanimaadhoo International Airport has expanded its operational capacity by introducing a new apron. The current airport development project, which is supported by a loan from Indian EXIM Bank and consists of a new runway and contemporary terminal, was not finished at the same time as the apron.
The airport is managed by Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL), which moved operations from the old apron to the newly built facility. On Sunday morning, national carrier Maldivian conducted the runway’s first flight.
President Mohammed Muizzu introduced the apron as a strategic addition to increase revenue generation, according to RACL Managing Director Ahmed Mubeen. The 42,000-square-foot apron, which can hold up to six jets concurrently, will be marketed as a jet parking facility, according to RACL. After the main development project is finished, the apron will serve as an isolation bay.
The ongoing Hanimaadhoo airport development project is to add fuel storage facilities, boost passenger capacity to 1.3 million yearly, and enable the airport to handle larger aircraft, including A320s and Boeing 737s.
