His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu held official talks with His Excellency Asif Ali Zardari, President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, at Aiwan-e-Sadr, the official residence of the President of Pakistan, reaffirming the close and longstanding friendship between the Maldives and Pakistan and setting a positive direction for wider cooperation between the two countries.

President Dr Muizzu, accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, was warmly received upon arrival by President Asif Ali Zardari and Ms Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, First Lady of Pakistan and Member of the National Assembly. During the visit, President Dr Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also held separate official discussions with their respective counterparts, reflecting the high-level engagement surrounding the Maldivian delegation’s visit to Pakistan.

Welcoming President Dr Muizzu, President Zardari expressed his appreciation for the official visit and highlighted its significance in further strengthening the historic relations between Pakistan and the Maldives. President Dr Muizzu, in turn, thanked President Zardari and the Government and people of Pakistan for the generous hospitality extended to him, the First Lady and the Maldivian delegation.

During the discussions, President Dr Muizzu underscored the deep-rooted, historic and brotherly relationship shared by the Maldives and Pakistan, noting that the two countries have considerable potential to broaden cooperation across several important sectors. The President highlighted opportunities to expand collaboration in trade, education, healthcare and capacity building, areas that could deliver direct and long-term benefits to the people of both nations.

The two leaders also reviewed existing areas of cooperation and discussed opportunities for stronger engagement at bilateral and multilateral levels. The talks reflected the shared interest of both governments in developing practical partnerships, strengthening institutional cooperation and creating new avenues for economic and social development.

Tourism was also highlighted during the meeting, with President Zardari commending the impressive growth and international success of the Maldives tourism industry. The Maldives has established itself as one of the world’s most prominent luxury tourism destinations, supported by its distinctive resort model, internationally recognised hospitality sector, pristine natural environment and continued investment in high-quality tourism infrastructure.

The Maldivian resort industry remains a major pillar of the national economy and an important source of international recognition for the country. With island resorts offering highly personalised hospitality experiences, world-class accommodation and direct access to the Maldives’ renowned marine environment, the sector continues to strengthen the country’s position in the global tourism market. The Government has also continued to encourage tourism development and investment while seeking opportunities to expand the economic benefits of the industry and strengthen related sectors.

President Zardari expressed confidence that the series of Memoranda of Understanding exchanged earlier in the day would provide further momentum to Maldives-Pakistan relations and create new opportunities for cooperation. He also thanked President Dr Muizzu for undertaking the visit and noted that the people of Pakistan were pleased to welcome a highest-level visit from the Maldives after a long interval.

The official engagement reflects the Government of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s continued efforts to strengthen the Maldives’ international partnerships, deepen relations with longstanding friendly countries and pursue greater opportunities in economic development, education, healthcare, institutional cooperation and human resource development.

The meeting concluded with President Dr Muizzu and President Zardari reaffirming their shared commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, expanding mutually beneficial cooperation and advancing the common interests of the Maldives and Pakistan. The discussions are expected to further enhance the strong bonds of friendship between the two nations and provide a stronger foundation for future collaboration across a wider range of sectors.
