The Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade has confirmed that Maldives Expo 2026 will introduce a dedicated International District, providing overseas companies with a specialised platform to showcase products, technologies and expertise while creating new opportunities for Maldivian businesses and creators to build international connections.
The expo will feature seven districts this year, including two new additions designed to broaden the scope of the national exhibition. The Visitor Economy District will focus on businesses operating across the Maldives’ tourism sector, while the International District will bring together companies and exhibitors from overseas, adding a stronger global dimension to the event.
Speaking on PSM News’ Maldives Expo 2026 countdown programme, State Minister for Economic Development, Transport and Trade Abdulla Shiyaz said international companies had also participated in last year’s exhibition, but organisers had decided to establish a dedicated district this year to create a more structured platform for international engagement.
He said the initiative is intended to strengthen Maldivian creativity, empower local creators and provide them with greater opportunities to engage with established international companies, innovators and business networks. By bringing local and overseas participants into the same national exhibition environment, the government aims to encourage the exchange of ideas, technical knowledge and commercial experience.
State Minister Shiyaz said one of the key objectives of the International District is to help Maldivian creators develop meaningful relationships with international counterparts and gain access to the support, expertise and partnerships needed to further develop their ideas. He described the district as an important bridge connecting Maldivian talent with international creators and businesses.
The International District is expected to feature companies that play significant roles in the Maldives’ infrastructure and development sectors, with participation from businesses based in neighbouring India, China and the United Arab Emirates. Their presence is expected to give Maldivian entrepreneurs and creators greater exposure to international technologies, business practices and potential areas of collaboration.
A major focus of the district will be the presentation of new technological innovations. The government expects these displays to contribute to wider discussions on digital transformation and technological development in the Maldives, while giving local participants an opportunity to explore solutions that may support the country’s growing digital economy, infrastructure and business sectors.
Although international exhibitors will participate prominently in Maldives Expo 2026, the Ministry has clarified that the competition component of the event will remain exclusively open to Maldivians. This arrangement is intended to ensure that local creators, entrepreneurs and innovators remain at the centre of the competitive platform while still benefiting from international exposure and networking opportunities.
