Australia has emerged as one of the fastest-growing tourism markets for the Maldives, rising to become the country’s seventh-largest source market for visitor arrivals following a significant increase in the number of Australian travellers choosing the island destination this year.
According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, a total of 39,487 tourists from Australia have visited the Maldives so far this year, representing a 20.2 per cent increase compared with 32,843 arrivals recorded during the corresponding period last year. Australian visitors now account for approximately 2.4 per cent of total tourist arrivals to the Maldives.
The strong performance has lifted Australia from 11th place at the end of last year to seventh among the Maldives’ leading tourism source markets, highlighting the growing popularity of the destination among Australian travellers seeking high-quality island holidays, premium resort experiences and tropical escapes in the Indian Ocean.
Growth from the Australian market has accelerated particularly during the second half of the year. During the first six months, 17,737 Australian tourists visited the Maldives, while arrivals increased substantially in the months that followed, reflecting stronger travel demand and improving air connectivity between the two countries.
The Maldives continues to attract international travellers through its extensive portfolio of luxury resorts, private-island properties, boutique hotels and guesthouses, offering a wide range of accommodation and hospitality experiences across its atolls. The country’s globally recognised overwater villas, pristine beaches, marine biodiversity, personalised resort services and year-round tropical environment have helped strengthen its position as a preferred long-haul destination for travellers from markets such as Australia.
Improved connectivity is also expected to support further growth. National carrier Maldivian launched direct flights to Melbourne on 18 May this year, strengthening links between the Maldives and Australia. Following strong demand for the service, the airline has decided to introduce scheduled weekly flights from next year using Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft from its fleet.
The expansion of direct air services is expected to make the Maldives more accessible to Australian travellers while supporting the Government’s wider efforts to diversify tourism source markets, strengthen international connectivity and increase visitor arrivals from high-potential destinations.
Australia’s rapid rise comes as the Maldives continues to record strong arrivals from several major international markets. China remains one of the country’s leading source markets, contributing more than 300,000 tourists, while arrivals from Russia have exceeded 200,000. The United Kingdom, Germany and Italy have each contributed more than 100,000 visitors, while neighbouring India has recorded more than 95,000 arrivals.
The continued expansion of established and emerging tourism markets reflects the strength of the Maldives’ global tourism brand and the Government’s ongoing focus on improving air connectivity, expanding market reach and sustaining the country’s position as one of the world’s leading island destinations.
