A high-level Maldivian delegation has held a series of meetings in Shanghai as part of ongoing efforts to increase tourist arrivals from China, which remains the Maldives’ largest source market for visitors. The discussions were carried out during an official visit to China by a delegation comprising senior government officials and representatives of state-owned enterprises and industry organisations involved in the tourism sector, reflecting a coordinated national effort to further strengthen the Maldives’ presence in one of its most important international markets.
The delegation is led by State Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Haris Mohamed and Managing Director of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) Ibrahim Shiuree. It also includes senior officials from MMPRC, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Maldivian, the national airline, and leading tourism industry associations. The broad representation highlights the close collaboration between public institutions and key tourism stakeholders in supporting the continued growth of the Maldivian tourism industry and expanding access to the destination for international travellers.
During the visit, the delegation met representatives of Shanghai-based travel companies ABC Travel and Run Tour, as well as Megacap, the General Sales Agent for Maldivian in China. The meetings focused on ways to increase Chinese tourist arrivals to the Maldives through stronger business partnerships, market-specific promotional strategies, and the development of travel packages tailored to the interests and preferences of Chinese travellers. Discussions also centred on enhancing the visibility of the Maldives across the Chinese travel trade and consumer market, while further strengthening cooperation between Maldivian tourism partners and companies operating in China.
Additional emphasis was placed on expanding marketing initiatives and improving air connectivity between the Maldives and China, both of which are considered important to sustaining long-term growth in arrivals. Better connectivity and more targeted promotions are expected to support easier travel planning for visitors and create further opportunities for resorts, hotels, guesthouses, airlines, and travel businesses operating across the Maldivian tourism value chain. The engagements in Shanghai also reflect the Maldives’ wider strategy of maintaining strong relationships with major international markets while continuing to position the country as a preferred destination for premium leisure travel.
The Maldives remains highly attractive to global travellers for its distinctive blend of natural beauty, privacy, hospitality, and world-class tourism experiences. From internationally renowned island resorts and overwater villas to family holidays, honeymoon escapes, wellness retreats, marine adventures, and culturally enriching local island experiences, the destination continues to offer a diverse and high-quality product suited to a wide range of travellers. For Chinese visitors in particular, the Maldives presents a combination of convenience, exclusivity, and memorable tropical experiences that continue to resonate strongly in the market.
According to the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, 174,201 tourists from China have visited the Maldives so far this year, making China the country’s largest tourism source market. The meetings held in Shanghai are expected to further reinforce this momentum and support continued growth in arrivals, while deepening commercial partnerships that will benefit the Maldives’ tourism industry and contribute positively to the country’s broader economic development.
