The Maldives exported more than 335 tonnes of cargo through its sea-to-air cargo service in June, according to the latest statistics released by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), highlighting continued growth in the country’s logistics and transshipment capabilities. The volume shipped during the month was equivalent to 65 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), with consignments forwarded from the Maldives to seven countries through four international airlines.
MPL stated that the sea-to-air cargo shipments in June were handled through Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Saudia and Emirates, reflecting the Maldives’ expanding connectivity to major international trade and cargo networks. The service enables goods arriving in the Maldives by sea to be transshipped efficiently and transported onward by air to overseas destinations, providing a practical and time-sensitive logistics solution for exporters and international supply chain operators.
The June performance marks a significant increase from May, when 162 tonnes of cargo were exported through the same service. Based on MPL’s figures, the 335 tonnes handled last month represented a 102 per cent rise compared with the previous month, indicating strong momentum in the uptake of the service and growing confidence in the Maldives as an emerging logistics platform in the Indian Ocean region.
The sea-to-air cargo service is jointly operated by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and Maldives Ports Limited, and was launched in May 2024 as part of broader efforts to diversify and strengthen the country’s economic activity. Since its introduction, the service has supported faster cargo movement by combining the advantages of maritime freight and air connectivity, allowing the Maldives to offer greater flexibility to businesses seeking efficient regional and international distribution options.
Globally, sea-to-air cargo services are recognised for generating substantial economic value by reducing transit times, improving supply chain efficiency and enhancing trade competitiveness. For the Maldives, the continued expansion of this service presents encouraging prospects for the development of the logistics sector, supported by the country’s strategic location and the strong presence of international airlines operating to and from Velana International Airport. With further growth in cargo handling volumes and destination reach, the Maldives is increasingly positioned to strengthen its role as a reliable logistics and transshipment hub serving regional and global markets.
