Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, has announced a significant expansion of its domestic flight operations in preparation for the upcoming school holiday season, with more than 2,000 flights scheduled across the country. The increase reflects a 17 per cent expansion over the airline’s regular domestic schedule and is aimed at meeting the customary rise in travel demand during one of the busiest periods of the year. The enhanced operation is expected to provide greater convenience for families, students, and other travellers planning journeys across the Maldives, while also supporting seamless connectivity between Malé and the atolls.
According to the airline, the expanded schedule has been carefully planned in advance to ensure sufficient capacity during the holiday period. In addition to more than 1,700 flights operated under its standard schedule, Maldivian has introduced over 325 supplementary flights based on passenger demand and forecasting. This means that for approximately every six flights operated during the school holiday period, one will be an additional service introduced specifically to respond to increased travel requirements. The arrangement demonstrates the airline’s continued focus on service readiness, operational efficiency, and customer convenience during peak travel seasons.
Maldivian projects that it will transport more than 110,000 passengers during the school holidays. Of this total, over 91,700 passengers are expected to travel on regularly scheduled services, while more than 18,200 passengers will be accommodated on the supplementary flights. Tickets are currently available for services with the capacity to carry more than one hundred thousand passengers, offering travellers early access to a broad range of domestic connections. The expanded operation is expected to ease pressure on peak routes, improve travel flexibility, and support smoother holiday planning for residents and visitors moving between islands.
The airline’s latest operational plan builds on strong performance recorded during the recent Eid holiday period, when Maldivian successfully operated more than 1,200 domestic flights. During Eid, 1,014 flights were operated under the regular schedule, while 213 flights were introduced as supplementary services. One out of every five flights during that period was an additional service, enabling the airline to transport more than 65,000 passengers. The successful management of that high-demand period has further strengthened confidence in the airline’s ability to deliver reliable domestic connectivity during major national travel seasons.
The upcoming school holiday expansion highlights Maldivian’s important role in supporting mobility across the archipelago and ensuring that communities remain well connected during periods of heightened demand. By strengthening domestic seat capacity and increasing flight frequency, the airline is also contributing to the broader travel and tourism environment of the Maldives, where dependable inter-island transportation remains essential for family travel, local commerce, and visitor movement. The expanded schedule is expected to serve not only as a practical response to seasonal demand, but also as a positive reflection of the national carrier’s commitment to service excellence and its continued investment in accessible domestic air travel.
