Saudi Arabian low-cost carrier Flynas has resumed its scheduled services to the Maldives, further enhancing air connectivity between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and one of the world’s most sought-after island destinations. Marking the relaunch of the route, the airline’s first flight arrived at Velana International Airport on 20 June, where it was welcomed with a traditional water salute, reflecting the significance of the occasion for the Maldives’ aviation and tourism sectors.
According to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Flynas will operate three weekly flights between King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and the Maldives. The renewed service is expected to provide greater convenience for travellers seeking direct access to the Maldives, while also supporting the continued expansion of travel links between the two countries. MACL noted that the resumption of the route presents a valuable opportunity to further strengthen bilateral connectivity and create greater momentum for tourism and commercial exchange.
To celebrate the return of the airline’s operations, passengers arriving from Riyadh were accorded a warm Maldivian welcome at Velana International Airport, including vibrant Boduberu cultural performances that highlighted the country’s rich heritage and hospitality. Commemorative gifts were also presented to arriving passengers as well as those travelling on the airline as part of the special occasion, adding a memorable touch to the inaugural service.
The return of Flynas is expected to provide a meaningful boost to visitor arrivals from the Middle East, a market that continues to hold growing importance for the Maldives’ tourism industry. Saudi Arabia remains an increasingly significant source market, and improved direct connectivity is anticipated to support stronger travel demand from the region. With the Maldives renowned globally for its world-class resorts, exceptional natural beauty, and high standards of hospitality, the reintroduction of this route offers travellers from Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East easier access to the country’s distinctive blend of luxury, privacy, and authentic island experiences.
The renewed air link is also likely to benefit the Maldives’ resort sector, which remains central to the country’s tourism success. From internationally acclaimed private island retreats to family-friendly resorts and boutique properties, the Maldives continues to attract global travellers seeking premium accommodation, marine experiences, wellness-focused stays, and personalised service in a uniquely scenic environment. The availability of additional direct flights from Riyadh is expected to further support occupancy across resorts and tourism establishments while encouraging greater confidence among travellers planning holidays to the destination.
MACL stated that the return of Flynas services aligns with broader efforts to strengthen the Maldives’ aviation sector and expand the international reach of Velana International Airport. The company is continuing to engage with more international airlines to encourage new and expanded services to the Maldives, with the aim of improving accessibility while maintaining high standards of passenger service. The resumption of Flynas flights is therefore seen as a positive development not only for tourism, but also for the continued growth of the Maldives as a well-connected and globally competitive destination.
