The Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade has announced the “Addu Business Dialogue,” a strategic initiative aimed at advancing reforms and addressing the challenges faced by commercial operators in Addu City and Addu Atoll. Scheduled to take place on 13 and 14 May, the two-day forum is expected to provide an important platform for businesses to engage directly with policymakers while encouraging stronger participation from small and medium-sized enterprises in shaping the economic future of the southern region.
The dialogue has been designed as a collaborative forum where business owners, industry representatives and relevant stakeholders can openly identify barriers to growth and discuss practical solutions for long-term development. Covering Addu City as well as the islands of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo in Addu Atoll, the initiative reflects a focused effort to better understand the needs of businesses operating in one of the Maldives’ most strategically located and economically promising regions. Speaking on the Public Service Media programme “Raajje Miadhu,” State Minister for Economic Development Abdulla Shiyaz said President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has decided to accelerate development in Addu by extending exclusive and specialised benefits to businesses in the area for a period of three years. According to Shiyaz, the administration is also working towards transforming the region into an information technology hub, signalling a broader vision for Addu that goes beyond traditional sectors and opens new pathways for innovation, investment and skilled employment. This direction is expected to enhance Addu’s competitiveness while creating an enabling environment for both established companies and emerging entrepreneurs.
Officials have noted that although previous administrations had undertaken efforts to address difficulties faced by the business community, the current initiative represents a more focused regional approach. Shiyaz explained that the programme gives participants the opportunity to directly present their vision and priorities to government decision-makers, allowing future strategies to be shaped through solutions agreed upon by both the public and private sectors.
