Russia has become the second source market to surpass 100,000 tourist arrivals to the Maldives so far this year, underscoring the destination’s continued appeal among international travellers and reinforcing the strength of the country’s tourism industry as global travel demand steadily improves. The milestone comes after China became the first market to cross the same threshold, reflecting the Maldives’ strong positioning in key outbound markets and its sustained attractiveness as a premium island destination for leisure, luxury, and long-haul travel.

According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, tourist arrivals to the Maldives reached 786,529 as of 18 April. Although this represents a 4.8 per cent decline compared to the same period in 2025, the figures also indicate encouraging signs of recovery, particularly as airline services affected by regional instability begin returning to normal. Authorities have linked the temporary slowdown in visitor numbers to flight cancellations associated with the conflict in the Middle East. With operations now resuming across several routes, arrival numbers have started to improve, and the Maldives is currently welcoming an average of around 6,600 tourists per day.

Russia recorded 100,450 arrivals during the period, reflecting a notable 26.3 per cent increase compared to 79,509 visitors during the corresponding period last year. The strong rise highlights the Maldives’ enduring popularity among Russian holidaymakers, who continue to favour the destination for its year-round warm climate, pristine beaches, turquoise lagoons, privacy, and globally recognised portfolio of luxury resorts. The steady growth from this market also reflects the adaptability of Maldivian tourism stakeholders in responding to changing travel patterns and maintaining visibility in competitive international markets.

China remains the leading source market to the Maldives with 116,441 visitors, further demonstrating the importance of Asia’s major outbound travel segments to the country’s tourism performance. Russia follows closely in second place, while the United Kingdom ranked third with 71,454 arrivals. Italy recorded 65,038 visitors and Germany contributed 52,555 arrivals, confirming the continued importance of Europe as a major pillar of the Maldivian tourism economy. The top ten source markets also include India with 36,129 visitors, France with 25,904, the United States with 20,108, Switzerland with 18,833, and Australia with 15,666, illustrating the Maldives’ wide-reaching appeal across diverse regions and traveller profiles.

The latest figures also reflect the resilience of the Maldives’ resort sector, which remains the cornerstone of the nation’s tourism offering. Resorts across the country continue to attract guests seeking high-end experiences defined by privacy, personalised hospitality, marine adventures, wellness offerings, and world-class accommodation set against the natural beauty of the islands. The Maldives’ unique one-island-one-resort concept remains a defining advantage in the global tourism market, offering visitors an exclusive and immersive experience that is difficult to replicate elsewhere. This model, combined with sustained investment in service quality, connectivity, and destination marketing, continues to support demand from both traditional and emerging markets.

Data from the ministry further shows that air travel continues to account for the overwhelming majority of arrivals to the Maldives. A total of 776,178 travellers entered the country by air, with 766,175 passengers arriving through Velana International Airport, reaffirming its role as the country’s main international gateway. Gan International Airport recorded 3,245 arrivals during the same period, contributing to the broader network supporting tourism access to the islands. The continued movement of large numbers of travellers through these gateways reflects the Maldives’ operational readiness and the strength of its tourism infrastructure in accommodating international demand.

Despite short-term disruptions affecting the wider travel environment, the latest arrival trends point to renewed momentum for the Maldives as one of the world’s most sought-after resort destinations. With strong performance from major markets such as China and Russia, improving airline connectivity, and a globally admired tourism product centred on exceptional resort experiences, the Maldives remains well placed to sustain recovery and strengthen its position in the international tourism landscape throughout the year.
