Revenue generated from the Maldives’ international bunkering service has reached MVR 730 million since the service was introduced, underscoring the rapid expansion of a strategic sector that is steadily strengthening the country’s commercial maritime profile. The latest figures reflect a notable rise in operational activity in recent months and highlight the growing importance of bunkering as a new pillar of national revenue generation.
Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed stated that the service, which was launched in September 2024, had generated the equivalent of USD 47 million as of 31 March. The initiative is being carried out through a partnership involving the State Trading Organization (STO), Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), and Swiss-based Vitol, combining local institutional capacity with international industry expertise. The collaboration has contributed to the structured rollout of the service and has helped position the Maldives as an emerging participant in the regional marine fuel supply market.
The latest revenue level also reflects a sharp acceleration when compared with earlier figures released during the initial stages of the operation. By late December 2025, the bunkering service had generated MVR 282 million, with a further MVR 24 million recorded shortly thereafter. This means that approximately MVR 424 million was generated over the following three-month period alone, pointing to a significant increase in demand and a stronger pace of commercial activity as operations expanded beyond the introductory phase.
This upward trend indicates that the bunkering service is moving into a more mature stage of development, supported by improving operational scale and growing market engagement. For the Maldives, the service represents more than a new commercial activity. It reflects a broader effort to diversify the economy, capitalize on the country’s strategic location along major international shipping routes, and create additional value from maritime trade and logistics services. As global shipping continues to seek efficient and well-positioned fueling points across the Indian Ocean region, the Maldives is increasingly being recognized as a promising destination for marine fuel supply operations.
The strong revenue growth seen in recent months also signals growing confidence in the Maldives’ ability to develop internationally competitive maritime services. With STO and MPL working alongside Vitol, the bunkering initiative has benefited from both domestic institutional support and international technical and commercial experience, providing a foundation for continued expansion. This model is expected to support higher volumes, stronger market presence, and more sustained returns as the service continues to grow.
The government has previously set out an ambitious long-term vision for the sector, with plans to transform bunkering into a substantially larger revenue stream capable of generating USD 400 million annually. The progress achieved so far suggests that the service is developing into a meaningful economic opportunity for the Maldives, while reinforcing the country’s role not only as a world-renowned tourism destination but also as a rising player in regional trade, maritime services, and strategic ocean-based commerce.
