The Government of the Maldives has assisted 1,888 tourists who were unable to continue their travel due to flight disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, according to Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim. Speaking on the situation, the minister explained that immediate measures were implemented to support visitors affected by cancelled and delayed flights, ensuring that tourists received assistance while waiting for alternative travel arrangements. The government coordinated efforts at Velana International Airport to help those who experienced difficulties and ensured that necessary support services were available during the period of disruption.
Minister Thoriq noted that the response to the situation was strengthened through close cooperation with stakeholders across the Maldivian tourism industry. Resort operators, airlines, and tourism service providers worked together with government authorities to provide practical solutions for stranded travellers. Several resorts extended their hospitality by allowing affected tourists to prolong their stays without significant increases in accommodation prices. This coordinated effort helped ensure that visitors were able to remain comfortably in the country while awaiting the resumption of their travel plans, reflecting the Maldives’ longstanding reputation for hospitality and service excellence.
The minister further stated that many travel bookings scheduled for March and April had been cancelled due to the uncertainty caused by the regional situation. In response to these circumstances, numerous resorts demonstrated flexibility by allowing guests to reschedule their reservations without imposing substantial additional charges. Such arrangements were made to maintain traveller confidence and provide reassurance to visitors who may have faced disruptions beyond their control.
According to Minister Thoriq, authorities have already provided assistance to 1,888 tourists who required help at the airport or needed support in making alternative travel arrangements. He emphasised that the government has also prepared a plan to further strengthen assistance mechanisms should additional disruptions occur. The plan aims to enhance coordination between government agencies, airlines, and tourism establishments to ensure a smooth response to any future travel challenges.
Looking ahead, the government intends to intensify tourism marketing activities beginning early next month to offset any potential impact from the recent disruptions. Minister Thoriq explained that promotional efforts will focus on strengthening demand from key international tourism markets that traditionally contribute a significant share of arrivals to the Maldives.
China, India, and Russia have been identified as priority markets under this strategy. The government is working closely with airline partners and relevant stakeholders to increase flight frequencies and facilitate additional services from these destinations. Strengthening air connectivity from major source markets is expected to support the continued growth and stability of the Maldivian tourism sector.
Minister Thoriq also stated that discussions are ongoing with neighbouring countries, international tourism destinations, and airline operators to further enhance connectivity to the Maldives. Among the airlines currently maintaining strong operations to the country, Turkish Airlines has remained particularly active. The Maldivian government is engaged in discussions with the Government of Türkiye to further strengthen Turkish Airlines’ operations and expand opportunities for increased connectivity.
In addition to these efforts, Maldivian embassies in several countries are actively working to support tourism promotion within their respective markets. Through diplomatic channels and coordinated promotional initiatives, these missions are contributing to efforts aimed at sustaining international interest in the Maldives as a premier global tourism destination.
The minister also advised stakeholders working across the tourism industry to closely follow the latest guidelines issued by the Ministry of Tourism. Adherence to these guidelines is expected to ensure a coordinated national response and maintain the high standards of service and safety that international travellers expect when visiting the Maldives.
Despite the temporary disruptions experienced in global travel networks, the Maldives continues to demonstrate resilience through strong collaboration between government institutions and the private tourism sector.
