Air India has announced a temporary expansion of its international flight operations with increased capacity to the Maldives, responding to widespread global air travel disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The airline confirmed that it will operate 78 additional flights between 10 and 18 March across nine key routes, strategically connecting major Indian cities with destinations including Malé, Colombo, and several prominent European and American hubs. The expanded schedule aims to ensure continuity of travel for passengers as multiple West Asian air corridors continue to experience restrictions and operational delays.

Under the revised operational plan, the Maldives has been prioritized as a key regional destination within Air India’s international network. The airline will deploy Airbus A320neo aircraft to support increased frequencies between India and Malé, enabling the airline to accommodate the growing demand for reliable travel options during a period when traditional transit routes through major Gulf aviation hubs have become less predictable. By adopting alternative flight paths that avoid the affected regions, Air India seeks to maintain schedule reliability for both leisure and business travelers. The additional services across the network will introduce approximately 17,660 seats, helping to stabilize passenger movement during a time of heightened uncertainty in the global aviation sector.

The Maldives continues to attract strong international interest as one of the world’s leading luxury island destinations, renowned for its pristine turquoise lagoons, white sandy beaches, and distinctive one-island-one-resort concept that offers privacy and exclusivity. The archipelago, located in the Indian Ocean southwest of Sri Lanka and India, comprises over 1,000 coral islands organized into 26 natural atolls and hosts more than 170 operational tourist resorts. These resorts range from internationally acclaimed luxury brands to boutique private island retreats, offering experiences that combine marine biodiversity, wellness tourism, and high-end hospitality. Visitors are drawn to the Maldives not only for its tranquil environment but also for activities such as diving, snorkeling, marine conservation experiences, and world-class spa and culinary offerings that highlight both international and Maldivian traditions.

Tourism remains the cornerstone of the Maldivian economy, contributing significantly to national income and employment while positioning the country as a globally recognized travel destination. Maintaining convenient and reliable international air connectivity is therefore essential to sustaining visitor flows and supporting the broader tourism ecosystem, including resorts, guesthouses, liveaboard vessels, and related service industries. Increased flight capacity from major markets such as India provides valuable connectivity for travelers seeking seamless access to the islands, particularly during periods when traditional transit routes experience disruptions.

Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer of Air India, stated that the additional services are intended to provide passengers with more stable travel alternatives amid regional volatility affecting international aviation. While long-haul flights to major global cities such as London and New York will be operated using Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, the targeted increase in narrow-body services to the Maldives ensures that the island nation remains accessible to international travelers despite the logistical challenges currently facing the wider aviation network.

The expanded operations further reinforce India’s role as a practical transit gateway for travelers seeking to reach Malé without navigating the constraints currently affecting several Middle Eastern air routes. For visitors planning holidays in the Maldives’ renowned resorts, as well as for tourism professionals and international business travelers, the additional services provide important reassurance that connectivity to one of the world’s most sought-after island destinations remains reliable and accessible.
