The Maldivian Night held on the sidelines of ITB Berlin 2026 highlighted the cultural vibrancy, hospitality, and growing global appeal of the Maldives, offering international tourism partners and stakeholders a unique experience of the island nation’s traditions and tourism success. The event was organized by Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) and brought together tourism professionals, partners, and representatives to celebrate Maldivian culture while reinforcing the country’s strong position as one of the world’s leading travel destinations.
Speaking during the event, Managing Director of Visit Maldives Corporation Ibrahim Shiuree emphasized that Maldivian Night represents more than a scheduled tourism activity and serves as an important platform to present the spirit and cultural identity of the Maldives to a global audience. He noted that the event provides an opportunity to introduce the country through its rich folktales, traditional talents, and distinctive delicacies, allowing international visitors and industry partners to experience the authentic character of the Maldivian archipelago. Shiuree explained that while the event was conducted on a smaller scale this year due to logistical challenges caused by airspace closures that prevented some teams from arriving with planned items, the evening continued to reflect the warmth, resilience, and hospitality that define the Maldives.
Shiuree also highlighted the significance of collaboration within the tourism sector, noting that the event was organized together with the Bank of Maldives (BML) after several years. He expressed confidence that partnerships between industry stakeholders would continue to strengthen through initiatives such as Maldivian Night, which brings together tourism professionals and partners in a setting that celebrates culture while promoting long-term cooperation.
During the gathering, Chairman of Visit Maldives Corporation Abdullah Ghiyas provided an overview of the recent growth and achievements of the Maldivian tourism industry. He stated that over the past five years the country’s tourism sector has evolved into a world-class industry, supported by consistent marketing initiatives, strong international partnerships, and the continued development of luxury resorts and unique travel experiences across the archipelago. Ghiyas explained that 2025 was a particularly strong year for the sector, with tourism revenues reaching USD 5.5 billion, reflecting the increasing global demand for the Maldives as a premium destination for leisure travel.
Ghiyas further highlighted that extensive marketing campaigns were conducted throughout the previous year in collaboration with major international tour operators and airlines. According to him, these campaigns were designed not only to increase global awareness but to generate measurable results for the industry. As a result of these efforts, the Maldives welcomed a record-breaking number of tourists during the year. He also noted that the momentum has continued into the current year, with January registering record visitor arrivals and February witnessing the daily arrival record being surpassed three times, demonstrating sustained global interest in the destination.
Addressing the gathering, Maldives Ambassador to Germany Aishath Shaan Shakir described Germany as an important partner in the Maldives’ tourism development. She noted that German travellers have long maintained a close connection with the Maldives, visiting the country not only for leisure holidays but also for a variety of experiences offered by the islands. According to the ambassador, the continued interest from German visitors reflects the strong relationship and mutual trust between the people of the Maldives and Germany.
Maldivian Night was held for the first time in several years, bringing renewed energy and celebration to the tourism showcase. The evening featured vibrant cultural presentations and entertainment that reflected the traditions and lifestyle of the Maldives. A special draw was also conducted among participants, with several gifts presented to attendees, adding to the festive atmosphere of the event.
The gathering formed part of the Maldives’ broader participation in ITB Berlin 2026, one of the world’s most prominent tourism trade fairs, where destinations from across the globe present their offerings to international travel professionals. Through cultural showcases such as Maldivian Night, the Maldives continues to strengthen its global tourism partnerships while presenting the heritage, hospitality, and natural beauty that have made the island nation one of the most sought-after destinations in international travel.
