The Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has reaffirmed that the continued expansion and development of Velana International Airport remains closely connected to the Maldives’ long-term economic progress, highlighting aviation infrastructure as a central pillar supporting national prosperity and the sustained growth of the tourism sector. Speaking at the Velana Awards ceremony, MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef emphasised that the advancement of the country’s main international gateway directly contributes to strengthening economic activity, enhancing global connectivity, and supporting the broader development goals of the Maldives as a leading international tourism destination.

Addressing industry stakeholders gathered at the ceremony, Shareef noted that the achievements of the aviation sector are deeply rooted in collaboration with partners across airlines, tourism operators, service providers, and supporting industries. He explained that the Velana Awards were introduced to formally recognise the vital role played by these partners, whose continued cooperation enables the airport to maintain high operational standards while responding effectively to increasing global travel demand. According to Shareef, the success of Velana International Airport reflects a collective effort in which institutional progress is shaped by strong professional relationships and shared objectives across the aviation and tourism ecosystem.

Shareef further stated that operational efficiency remains the primary benchmark for measuring success within the aviation industry, stressing that improved service delivery, streamlined passenger handling, and expanded connectivity are essential indicators of progress. He highlighted the introduction of new aviation services and additional international flight routes as clear signs of the airport’s growing capacity and competitiveness. These developments, he explained, create broader opportunities for the Maldives by facilitating easier access for travellers, strengthening visitor arrivals, and enabling greater economic participation for businesses and communities throughout the country.

The Managing Director also underscored the importance of sustained cooperation among stakeholders in achieving the government’s annual aviation performance targets. He explained that meeting these benchmarks requires coordinated planning, consistent operational excellence, and ongoing investment in infrastructure and human capital. Shareef described the airport’s continued growth as a shared national undertaking, where collaboration across institutions contributes not only to organisational success but also to wider economic benefits, reinforcing the Maldives’ position in the global travel and tourism market.

Reflecting on recent infrastructure enhancements, Shareef highlighted the positive impact already generated by the newly developed passenger terminal at Velana International Airport. The upgraded facilities have improved passenger experience, increased handling capacity, and strengthened operational efficiency, supporting the rising demand associated with the Maldives’ expanding tourism industry. He reaffirmed MACL’s commitment to aligning its development initiatives with the government’s broader economic vision, ensuring that aviation infrastructure continues to evolve alongside the country’s tourism sector. As international travel continues to grow, the expansion of Velana International Airport is expected to further enhance connectivity, support resort development across the archipelago, and contribute to sustained economic opportunities for the nation and its people while presenting the Maldives as an accessible, efficient, and welcoming destination for global travellers.
