Michelin-starred chef, restaurateur and television personality Glynn Purnell, widely celebrated as “The Yummy Brummie,” will present his bold, modern British cuisine at St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort this April as part of the resort’s Tastemaker Series. From 3 to 6 April, guests will experience Purnell’s confident, ingredient-led cooking through a thoughtfully curated programme that includes a signature tasting dinner, an intimate cooking class, and a relaxed finale hosted at The Whale Bar, creating opportunities for meaningful interaction with the chef in an immersive island setting.
With more than 35 years in the kitchen and two Michelin-starred restaurants to his name, Purnell brings a career shaped by discipline, creativity and a deep respect for produce. His culinary path began at the age of 14 through a hotel kitchen placement and evolved through formative roles at the Metropole Hotel and the acclaimed Simpson’s Restaurant, where he contributed to earning a Michelin star. His experience extends to Michelin-starred kitchens across Europe and collaborations with renowned chefs including Gordon Ramsay, Gary Rhodes and Claude Bosi. Purnell rose to prominence in Birmingham by earning the city’s first Michelin star for Jessica’s in 2005, followed by the continued success of Purnell’s, which has retained its Michelin star since 2009.
Beyond the kitchen, Purnell is a familiar and warmly received figure on British television, having twice won Great British Menu before returning as a mentor, and appearing on programmes such as Saturday Kitchen. He has also co-presented My Kitchen Rules UK alongside Rachel Allen, further cementing his reputation as a chef who pairs technical precision with approachability and personality.
Purnell’s residency complements the St. Regis Maldives’ Tastemaker Series, a programme designed to celebrate global culinary talent through storytelling, craftsmanship and guest engagement. His philosophy of championing responsibly sourced ingredients and sustainable practices aligns closely with the resort’s commitment to thoughtful luxury, refined dining and environmental awareness.
Set on the pristine shores of Vommuli Island, the experience offers international travellers a rare chance to enjoy contemporary British gastronomy within one of the Maldives’ most distinctive luxury destinations. The collaboration promises a vibrant exchange of culture, flavour and creativity, enriching the resort’s culinary calendar while delivering memorable moments for guests from around the world.
