His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu, President of the Republic of Maldives, has departed for the Federal Republic of Germany on an official visit from 9 to 13 February 2026, undertaken at the invitation of His Excellency Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of the Federal Republic of Germany. The visit reflects the Maldives’ commitment to deepening constructive engagement with key international partners and expanding cooperation across diplomatic, economic, and policy-focused domains.
During the visit, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is scheduled to hold high-level official discussions with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and senior members of the German government, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and exploring opportunities for expanded collaboration. The programme also includes a business forum bringing together representatives from both countries, aimed at fostering closer economic engagement, encouraging private sector dialogue, and identifying avenues for trade, investment, and innovation that support sustainable growth.
The President’s itinerary features engagements with leading academic and policy institutions in Germany. He will visit Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where he will address the Maldives’ experience in climate change adaptation, sharing insights from a small island developing state that has placed resilience, innovation, and sustainability at the centre of national development. He is also scheduled to speak at the German Council on Foreign Relations, presenting the Maldives’ perspective on the role of the ocean in foreign policy and highlighting the importance of ocean governance, climate diplomacy, and international cooperation in addressing shared global challenges.
The official visit takes place during the 60th anniversary year of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Germany, which were formally established on 5 July 1966. This milestone provides a timely opportunity to reaffirm longstanding ties and to advance a forward-looking partnership grounded in mutual respect, shared values, and a common interest in sustainable development, climate action, and enhanced people-to-people and economic connections.
