Hong Kong-based carrier Greater Bay Airlines has commenced direct charter flight operations between Hong Kong and the Maldives, further strengthening air connectivity between the two destinations during a period of heightened travel demand. The airline’s inaugural flight was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Velana International Airport, marking the start of a series of charter services aimed at supporting outbound travel from Hong Kong during the peak Chinese New Year holiday season.
The charter programme began on 8 February and will continue until 25 February, with one flight operating daily throughout the period. These services are scheduled to cater to the traditionally strong demand associated with the Chinese New Year travel window, a time when leisure travel to long-haul resort destinations sees a notable increase. The additional capacity is expected to provide greater flexibility for tour operators and travelers seeking direct access to the Maldives from Hong Kong.
Greater Bay Airlines, a Hong Kong-based low-cost carrier, is operating the route using Boeing 737-800 aircraft. At present, the airline is the only operator offering direct flights between Hong Kong and the Maldives, positioning the service as a convenient and competitive option for travelers from the Greater Bay Area and surrounding regions. The direct connection reduces overall travel time and enhances the Maldives’ accessibility as a premium leisure destination for Asian markets.
The launch of these charter flights aligns with the Maldives’ continued strong performance in tourism and its growing appeal among Chinese travelers. Tourism authorities have highlighted that China has emerged as the largest source market for the Maldives, with more than 35,000 Chinese tourists visiting the country so far this year, accounting for approximately 12 percent of total arrivals. This sustained demand reflects renewed confidence in international travel and the Maldives’ enduring reputation for high-quality resort experiences.
In 2025, the Maldives recorded a robust year for tourism, welcoming a record number of visitors overall. By the end of the year, arrivals from China reached 329,286, making it the single largest contributor to tourist numbers. The introduction of direct charter services from Hong Kong is expected to further support this upward trend, reinforcing the Maldives’ position as a preferred global resort destination and strengthening tourism ties with key Asian markets.
