The Maldives has achieved a new milestone in its tourism sector, with 10,253 tourists visiting the country on Sunday, marking the highest number of arrivals recorded in a single day, according to Ministry of Tourism. This figure surpasses the previous record of 10,213 arrivals registered on 10 February 2024 and further reinforces the Maldives’ position as one of the world’s most sought-after travel destinations.
The record daily arrival comes shortly after the country posted its highest-ever monthly tourist arrivals, with 224,788 visitors recorded last month. These results reflect strong global demand, sustained marketing initiatives, and the continued expansion and enhancement of tourism infrastructure across the nation. The Maldives is now receiving an average of more than 7,000 tourists per day, highlighting the steady momentum of the sector and its resilience in a highly competitive global market.
Tourism statistics indicate that 235,041 tourists have arrived so far this year, representing a 4.8 per cent increase compared with the same period last year. The largest source markets continue to be Russia, China, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Germany, followed by India, France, the United States, Poland, and Austria. The diversity of these markets underscores the broad international appeal of the Maldives and the effectiveness of its destination positioning across different regions.
Resorts remain the backbone of the Maldivian tourism industry, hosting 68 per cent of all visitors. The resort segment continues to attract travelers seeking premium accommodation, privacy, and world-class experiences, including overwater villas, pristine beaches, fine dining, wellness and spa offerings, and curated excursions that showcase the country’s marine biodiversity and natural beauty. Ongoing investments in resort development, refurbishment, and service excellence have strengthened the Maldives’ reputation for delivering high-quality, personalized experiences that appeal to both leisure and luxury travelers. At the same time, the growing presence of guesthouses, which accounted for 26.6 per cent of stays, reflects the increasing range of accommodation options and the sector’s ability to cater to varied budgets and travel preferences.
By the end of last year, total tourist arrivals reached 2.2 million, slightly below the government’s target of 2.3 million visitors. Building on the current growth trajectory, the Maldives is aiming to attract 2.4 million tourists this year. With robust demand, diversified source markets, and a strong resort-led product offering, the outlook for the Maldivian tourism industry remains highly positive, reinforcing its role as a key driver of economic growth and international recognition for the country.
