High Commissioner of India to the Maldives G. Balasubramanian has reaffirmed that economic ties between the Maldives and India continue to strengthen steadily, reflecting the growing depth and maturity of the long-standing partnership between the two countries. He made the remarks while speaking at a ceremony held at the Social Centre to mark India’s 77th Republic Day, an occasion that brought together senior government officials, former presidents, city mayors and members of the diplomatic community. Addressing the gathering, the High Commissioner highlighted the close cooperation between the Maldives and India and noted that India’s economy is currently the world’s fourth-largest and among the fastest growing globally, a development that carries positive implications for regional and international partners.
The High Commissioner said India is making significant progress across a wide range of sectors and emphasised that numerous joint infrastructure development projects being implemented by India and the Maldives have further reinforced economic relations between the two nations. He stated that the two countries share a relationship that has evolved through decades of trust, mutual respect and practical collaboration, and expressed confidence that political relations between the Maldives and India will continue to grow stronger in the years ahead. According to him, ongoing cooperation in development initiatives reflects the shared commitment of both governments to enhance connectivity, improve public services and support sustainable growth that directly benefits the people of the Maldives.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Khaleel also addressed the ceremony and underscored that relations between the Maldives and India are firmly founded on working together for the benefit of the people of both countries. He extended warm congratulations to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Government of India and the people of India on the occasion of the Republic Day, and highlighted the enduring friendship between the two neighbours. Dr Khaleel described the Maldives–India relationship as one rooted not only in history, but also in practical and people-centred cooperation that continues to deliver meaningful outcomes.
The Foreign Minister noted that India has consistently been a supportive partner to the Maldives and that Indian assistance has brought tangible benefits to Maldivian communities across multiple sectors. He pointed to the presence of Indian doctors, nurses and teachers working in the Maldives as a clear demonstration of India’s dedication and respect for the country, and as an example of cooperation that directly enhances the quality of life of Maldivian citizens. Dr Khaleel said such contributions illustrate the human dimension of bilateral relations and reflect a shared commitment to social development, capacity-building and long-term prosperity.
India’s Republic Day, celebrated annually on 26 January, marks the adoption and enforcement of the Constitution of India in 1950 and commemorates the swearing-in of Dr Rajendra Prasad as the country’s first President. The commemoration in Malé served as a timely reminder of the close and multifaceted partnership between the Maldives and India, and reaffirmed the collective determination of both nations to continue strengthening political, economic and people-to-people ties in a manner that supports stability, development and shared prosperity.
