Meliá Hotels & Resorts is set to expand its global footprint to the Maldives with the opening of Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives in January 2026, introducing the brand’s signature five-star, all-inclusive concept in one of the Indian Ocean’s most sought-after destinations. As the most internationally recognised brand under Meliá Hotels International, the new resort reflects the group’s continued focus on exceptional locations and guest experiences, bringing a fresh hospitality offering to travellers seeking premium comfort, immersive nature, and refined leisure in a pristine island setting.
Located in the South Ari Atoll, Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives has been positioned as a destination for a wide range of travellers, romantic getaways for couples, rejuvenating breaks for families, and ocean-focused adventures for marine enthusiasts. The journey is designed to set the tone from arrival, with guests travelling from Malé International Airport on a scenic 30-minute seaplane transfer before reaching the resort’s tranquil shores. The resort’s location also places visitors at the gateway to the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA), known for year-round encounters with whale sharks and manta rays, creating a strong appeal for nature-led travel and responsible marine exploration through activities such as snorkelling, diving, paddleboarding, and kayaking.
Accommodation at the resort centres on privacy and uninterrupted ocean views, with 100 private oceanfront villas created to strengthen the connection between guests and the surrounding seascape. The Water Villas, set above the turquoise lagoon, offer expansive horizon views that define the Maldives experience, while the Sunset Suite Villas with private pool provide an elevated option with generous living space, a dedicated pool, and sunset-facing panoramas designed for a more exclusive stay. For travellers who prefer direct access to the beach, the Beach Villas are positioned along the shoreline, allowing guests to step out from their room straight onto white sands and tropical serenity.
The all-inclusive offering is complemented by a broad lifestyle and wellness programme that supports both relaxation and active holidaymaking. Guests can explore an international dining selection across four restaurants and bars featuring Mediterranean and global flavours, unwind at two infinity pools, and recharge at the spa with wellness rituals, body treatments, and dedicated relaxation areas including a sauna and steam bath. The resort also places strong emphasis on entertainment and shared experiences, offering live music, open-air cinema under the stars, cooking classes, and activities tailored for younger guests, ensuring a balanced resort atmosphere for couples, families, and groups alike.
Commenting on the opening, Meliá Hotels International Chairman and CEO Gabriel Escarrer said the Maldives reflect the group’s purpose of expanding in the world’s most exclusive destinations while creating unique moments in remarkable settings, delivered with the hospitality that defines the brand. With the January 2026 launch of Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives, the company aims to strengthen its presence in the luxury leisure segment and offer global travellers an all-inclusive resort experience rooted in natural beauty, comfort, and memorable ocean-driven discovery.
