President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has established the Maldives Zakat House to operate under the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, in accordance with Article 11(a) of the Zakat Act, strengthening the country’s institutional governance for the administration of Zakat in line with Islamic principles.
With the formalisation of the Maldives Zakat House under the new legal framework, the Zakat House that previously operated under the Ministry of Islamic Affairs prior to the enactment of the Zakat Act has been dissolved, providing a clear transition into a single structure created and recognised directly under the Act. The President’s Office confirmed the establishment through Directive No. 01/2026, placing operations on a defined statutory footing to support consistency, accountability, and public confidence in the management of Zakat funds.
The Zakat Act provides a comprehensive legal framework for the payment, administration and distribution of Zakat in the Maldives in accordance with Islamic principles, emphasising effective and transparent management of Zakat funds across collection, governance, and disbursement. The Act was passed by the People’s Majlis and ratified by the President on 6 December 2025, and came into force on 1 January 2026, aligning the national Zakat system with clearer institutional responsibilities and controls from the first day of the new year.
For Maldivians and international observers alike, the establishment of the Maldives Zakat House under the Act signals a forward-looking approach to social finance and public administration, reinforcing trust in how faith-based contributions are safeguarded, administered, and directed to eligible beneficiaries. As the Maldives continues to strengthen public sector delivery and financial governance, the Zakat House is positioned to support social protection outcomes through a more structured, rules-based system that prioritises transparency, integrity, and service to communities.
