The Maldives ended 2025 on a strong tourism high, with the highest-ever number of visitor arrivals recorded in a single month. Data from the Ministry of Tourism and Environment (MoTE) shows that 218,650 tourist arrivals were registered in December, surpassing the previous monthly record of 217,392 travellers set in February 2024. The figure reflects arrivals up to 30 December, and with the final day of the month yet to be included at the time of reporting, the overall December total is expected to rise further, reinforcing the Maldives’ position as one of the world’s most in-demand island destinations.
Beyond December’s record performance, the country also delivered consistently high volumes in the first quarter of the year, underlining steady demand across multiple travel seasons. January recorded 214,863 arrivals, followed by February with 214,091 and March with 203,468, signalling strong destination confidence among leisure travellers, premium holidaymakers, and long-haul markets. The sustained trend highlights the Maldives’ ability to maintain robust occupancy and booking activity through a diverse mix of markets, product offerings, and travel segments.
Overall, the Maldives registered a 9.8 percent increase in tourist arrivals in 2025 compared to the previous year, welcoming more than 2.24 million visitors in total. China led the market in 2025 with over 300,000 arrivals, while Russia and the United Kingdom each contributed over 200,000 travellers. Industry stakeholders note that these results reflect continued air connectivity, destination visibility, and the enduring strength of the Maldives’ resort model, supported by a broad portfolio that ranges from ultra-luxury private-island retreats to family-oriented resorts and wellness-led properties.
Central to the Maldives’ global appeal is the resort experience itself—built around privacy, personalised service, and distinctive island living. Resorts across the country continue to elevate guest experiences through curated dining, overwater and beachfront accommodation, world-class spas, marine excursions, and nature-focused activities that showcase the Maldives’ lagoon ecosystems. Increasingly, sustainability and environmental responsibility have become defining features of the resort sector, with many properties strengthening initiatives such as reef conservation, renewable energy adoption, local sourcing, and community-linked programmes that enrich the guest journey while supporting long-term destination stewardship.
As the new year begins, the Maldives has already marked a positive start to 2026. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) welcomed the first tourist of 2026 at Terminal 1 of Velana International Airport (VIA) today. The first passenger arrival was Thomas Andreas HellWeger, a German citizen who arrived in the Maldives via Etihad Airways, and he shared that this was his first visit to the country. The ceremonial welcome reflects the optimism surrounding continued growth in arrivals and the Maldives’ ongoing focus on hospitality excellence, seamless travel experiences, and sustained global competitiveness.
