Maldivian has announced plans to introduce the first-ever direct flights between Australia and the Maldives, unveiling a new Melbourne–Malé service to be operated in partnership with leading Australian travel company Luxury Escapes. The weekly seasonal service is scheduled to commence on 17 May 2026, subject to regulatory approval from Australian authorities, and will represent Maldivian’s first direct operation to Australia as well as the first non-stop air link between the two countries.
Currently, travellers flying between Australia and the Maldives usually transit through major international hubs in Asia or the Middle East, adding extra hours and multiple connections to their journey. The upcoming direct service is expected to significantly shorten travel times and enhance connectivity to one of the Maldives’ most established long-haul tourism markets. Australia has remained a consistent source of visitors for Maldivian resorts and guesthouses, with Australian travellers widely recognised for their longer average stays and strong interest in premium island experiences.
According to Maldivian, the service has been carefully structured so that arrival times into Malé will align with onward domestic and seaplane connections across the country. This schedule design will allow passengers to seamlessly transfer to Maldivian’s existing domestic and seaplane network and reach resorts and islands across multiple atolls on the same day. For travellers, this means faster access to a wide variety of Maldivian properties, from ultra-luxury private island resorts and overwater villa retreats to family-friendly all-inclusive resorts and boutique hotels located closer to regional airports.
Maldivian Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas highlighted that Australia continues to play an important role in the Maldives’ tourism sector, with Australian visitors regularly ranking among the top long-haul markets for the destination. He noted that the direct route represents a historic step for the national airline, deepening connectivity between the Maldives and Australia while supporting national goals to grow tourism and expand the country’s global reach. The new flight is also expected to support resort operators by opening a more convenient gateway for Australian guests, particularly those seeking effortless travel for honeymoons, family holidays and special-occasion trips.
From the perspective of the Australian travel trade, demand for the Maldives is showing strong momentum. Luxury Escapes Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer Adam Schwab said booking data indicates that the Maldives is trending strongly for 2026, with hotel reservations rising and average stays of five to six nights. He added that around 20 percent of Australians travelling to the Maldives already do so via Luxury Escapes packages, and the new direct service has been designed to support this growing demand by making the journey simpler, faster and more appealing for both first-time visitors and repeat guests.
Melbourne Airport Chief Executive Officer Lorie Argus noted that the new route will make Melbourne the only airport in Australia with a direct connection to the Maldives. She emphasised that non-stop services are particularly attractive to travellers because of their convenience and time savings, benefits that are expected to resonate strongly with Australian travellers choosing between long-haul beach destinations. With the introduction of this service, travellers departing from Melbourne will be able to board an evening flight and wake up in a tropical island nation known worldwide for its crystal-clear lagoons, white-sand beaches and world-class resort offerings.
For Maldivian resorts, the direct air link has the potential to broaden market access and support higher occupancy across different segments, from luxury villa resorts to mid-scale family properties. Easier connectivity is expected to encourage more Australians to discover the diversity of Maldivian hospitality, including multi-island stays, wellness and spa retreats, diving and snorkelling getaways, and tailor-made packages that combine seaplane transfers with stays in both beach and overwater villas. Resort operators will be better positioned to craft packages aligned with fixed weekly schedules, giving guests clearer options and allowing travel planners to design smooth itineraries that maximise time spent on the islands.
Maldivian currently operates a mixed fleet across domestic, seaplane and international services, and the planned Australia route represents an important step in the airline’s international expansion. By adding Melbourne–Malé to its network, Maldivian will not only strengthen air links to a key tourism market but also reinforce the Maldives’ position as a premier Indian Ocean destination for discerning global travellers. The combination of direct access from Australia, integrated domestic and seaplane connections, and a wide spectrum of resort experiences positions the Maldives to welcome even more visitors seeking immersive, high-quality stays across its island destinations from 2026 onwards.
