Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC) of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Dongming, has paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at the President’s Office, underscoring the deepening ties between the Maldives and China across economic, social and tourism sectors. Vice Chairman Wang was accompanied by a senior delegation from the National People’s Congress, reflecting the importance Beijing attaches to its partnership with the Maldives.
During the meeting, President Dr Muizzu conveyed his sincere appreciation to President Xi Jinping and the Government of the People’s Republic of China for their continued support and cooperation, which he noted have played a pivotal role in the Maldives’ economic and social development. He reiterated his administration’s strong commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations based on mutual trust, long-standing friendship and shared development priorities. The President also highlighted China’s role in key national projects, including major infrastructure developments that have supported connectivity, housing, and public services central to the country’s growth.
Talks centred on broadening and deepening cooperation between the two countries, with particular attention to sectors that are critical to the Maldivian economy. Housing and infrastructure, fisheries and agriculture, tourism, connectivity, information technology and trade were identified as priority areas where both sides see strong potential for further collaboration. The discussions also took stock of the Memoranda of Understanding and agreements signed during President Muizzu’s visits to China, with both parties expressing satisfaction over the steady implementation of ongoing projects and the positive impact these initiatives are beginning to have on communities and businesses in the Maldives.
Tourism featured prominently in the conversation, reflecting its status as the main driver of the Maldivian economy and a key pillar of Maldives–China cooperation. In recent years, China has emerged as the Maldives’ leading source market, with Chinese travellers playing an increasingly important role in sustaining year-round occupancy at resorts, guesthouses and hotels across the archipelago. Chinese visitor growth has been supported by visa facilitation, improved air connectivity and strong destination awareness in the Chinese market, which together have helped maintain robust demand for Maldivian resorts renowned for their overwater villas, high-end hospitality and tailored experiences for couples, families and groups. The continuing recovery and expansion of Chinese arrivals offer significant opportunities for resort operators to diversify products, enhance guest services and develop new experiences designed around Chinese travellers’ preferences, from culinary offerings and language support to wellness, family-friendly activities and romantic packages. Strengthened bilateral ties and continued government-level engagement are expected to further encourage investment in tourism infrastructure, including new resort developments and upgrades to existing properties, reinforcing the Maldives’ position as a preferred premium destination for Chinese holidaymakers.
Vice Chairman Wang Dongming acknowledged the long-standing, close and friendly relations between the Maldives and China, noting that President Muizzu’s recent visits to China have further elevated the partnership. He emphasised that the purpose of the delegation’s visit was to deepen cooperation for the mutual benefit of both nations and their peoples. Wang reaffirmed China’s commitment to advancing the comprehensive strategic partnership and voiced strong support for the Maldives’ development agenda, including its priorities in infrastructure, social welfare and tourism-led growth. He also underlined Beijing’s readiness to work closely with Maldivian counterparts to translate high-level understandings and signed agreements into tangible outcomes felt by citizens, investors and industry stakeholders, particularly in sectors such as tourism where China’s outbound travel trends align closely with Maldivian market needs.
The meeting concluded with both sides reiterating their shared determination to further consolidate Maldives–China relations, with a clear focus on practical cooperation that delivers results on the ground. By aligning development priorities, advancing existing agreements and enhancing collaboration in cornerstone sectors such as tourism, infrastructure and trade, the Maldives and China aim to create more opportunities for economic expansion, job creation and sustainable growth. For the Maldivian tourism and resort industry, the strengthening of this partnership is expected to support continued growth in Chinese arrivals, encourage greater diversification of tourism products across the atolls and boost confidence in long-term investment in the Maldives as a world-class destination for travellers from China and beyond.
