Discover Airlines has officially resumed its scheduled flights between Frankfurt, Germany and Velana International Airport (VIA), reinforcing the Maldives’ status as a premier long-haul destination for European travelers. The return of the carrier was celebrated with a dedicated inaugural ceremony at VIA, which also marked the official opening of Discover Airlines’ check-in counters at the airport’s new passenger terminal. Operating from this modern facility, the airline is positioned to offer a smoother, more seamless travel experience for guests beginning their Maldivian journey.

Under the renewed schedule, Discover Airlines will operate two weekly flights between Malé and Frankfurt, significantly enhancing air connectivity between the Maldives and continental Europe. Germany remains a vital source market for the country’s tourism industry, and the wider European region continues to play a central role in maintaining robust year-round arrivals. The importance of the European market is further reflected by the United Kingdom ranking as the third-largest source of visitors to the Maldives this year, with 181,300 tourists recorded so far. These strong arrival numbers demonstrate sustained demand for the Maldives’ upscale resort product, renowned for its overwater villas, world-class diving, and high-end, personalized hospitality.

The operations of Discover Airlines from VIA’s newly opened state-of-the-art terminal will support the growing number of international carriers choosing the Maldives as a key destination in their network. Designed to handle increased passenger volumes with improved efficiency, the new terminal offers upgraded facilities, enhanced check-in and boarding processes, and a more comfortable environment for travelers. For resort partners across the atolls, this improved infrastructure translates into more reliable connections and a more elevated arrival and departure experience, which is a critical part of the overall premium holiday offering.

To commemorate the return of Discover Airlines, a ceremonial water salute welcomed the aircraft on arrival at Terminal 1, symbolizing the strengthening partnership between the airline, VIA, and the Maldivian tourism sector. The Managing Director of the Road Development Corporation, Ibrahim Nazeem, along with Deputy Managing Director Muhthaba Latheef and senior management, personally welcomed passengers arriving on Discover Airlines. Their presence underscored the broader national commitment to enhancing the visitor experience, from runway to resort, and to supporting stakeholders who contribute to the sustainable growth of the Maldives’ tourism industry.

With more airlines transitioning to VIA’s new terminal and boosting frequencies from key European hubs, the Maldives’ acclaimed resorts stand to benefit from increased accessibility and market reach. Direct connections from Frankfurt open convenient travel options not only for German visitors but also for travelers connecting from neighboring European countries, encouraging longer stays and repeat visits. As Discover Airlines resumes operations into VIA, Maldivian resorts gain another strategic link to one of their most important markets, further reinforcing the Maldives’ position as a leading global destination for luxury island escapes.
