Sun Siyam Resorts has announced a major step in its sustainability journey with the launch of one of the largest solar energy programmes in the Maldivian hospitality sector, centered on Siyam World Maldives and Sun Siyam Olhuveli. The initiative was introduced during a dedicated event held on 6 December 2025 at Sun Siyam Olhuveli, bringing together senior government officials, local media, trade partners and members of the group’s sustainability and management teams. Guests at the event were given a preview of how the new solar infrastructure will reshape day-to-day energy use across the resorts, reinforcing Sun Siyam’s long-term commitment to renewable energy and environmental responsibility under the Sun Siyam Care framework.

The solar programme is built around three core objectives: strengthening sustainability performance, increasing energy independence, and advancing technological innovation across the group’s portfolio. Between Siyam World Maldives and Sun Siyam Olhuveli, the installations will provide a total solar capacity of 4,110 kWp, generating an estimated 6,024,881.99 kWh of clean energy annually. This transition is expected to deliver annual diesel savings of approximately USD 1,292,289.12 and reduce carbon emissions by more than 4,458 tonnes per year. Once fully operational, the systems are projected to offset around 17 percent of total energy demand at Siyam World and 12 percent at Sun Siyam Olhuveli, directly supporting the Maldives’ target of 33 percent renewable energy penetration by 2028 and its broader Net Zero 2030 vision.

At Siyam World Maldives, set on a 54-hectare natural island in Dhigurah, Noonu Atoll, the solar programme is being integrated into one of the largest and most activity-rich resort environments in the country, home to extensive villa inventory, a floating water park, diverse dining venues and a wide range of experiences for families, couples and groups.  The goal is to maintain the resort’s vibrant, “everything under one roof” offering while significantly reducing its environmental footprint through cleaner energy generation and smarter power management. For guests, this means enjoying the same expansive choice of activities, restaurants and over-water and beachfront accommodation with the reassurance that an increasing share of the resort’s operations is powered by renewable energy.

Sun Siyam Olhuveli, a popular beach and spa resort set over three interconnected islands in South Malé Atoll and accessible by speedboat from Velana International Airport, is also being equipped with new solar capacity that will support its extensive leisure and accommodation facilities. Known for its sweeping lagoons, wide choice of villas and suites, multiple pools and broad mix of water sports and marine excursions, the resort will be able to better align its guest experience with sustainable operations as more of its energy demand is met by solar power. The initiative will help ensure that the resort’s pools, restaurants, wellness facilities and guest services operate with reduced reliance on diesel-powered generation, while maintaining the high standards and comfort expected by visitors.

Technically, both resorts will operate hybrid solar systems supported by battery storage solutions designed and installed by Hayleys Fentons Ltd of Sri Lanka. At Siyam World Maldives, the system will include 1,720 kWh of battery storage, while Sun Siyam Olhuveli will be equipped with 537.5 kWh of battery capacity. The installations will be managed through real-time monitoring dashboards that allow engineering teams to track generation, consumption and performance, optimising energy distribution and maximising the use of solar power during peak demand periods. Dedicated technical training programmes are being rolled out for resort engineering teams so they can operate, maintain and expand the systems in line with future requirements.

With installations scheduled for completion in December 2025, the solar rollout represents the first phase of a broader renewable energy roadmap for Sun Siyam Resorts. The group has set a target of achieving 50 percent renewable energy use by 2030 across its portfolio, using the systems at Siyam World and Sun Siyam Olhuveli as scalable models for future developments. The roadmap also focuses on enhancing energy resilience during periods of high occupancy and seasonal demand, reducing the group’s overall carbon footprint and aligning its resorts more closely with global sustainability benchmarks for the hospitality industry.

The initiative further strengthens several core pillars of Sun Siyam Care, the group’s sustainability platform. These include environmental stewardship through the transition from diesel to solar power; clean energy generation, with nearly six million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity expected annually; local empowerment, via training and capacity building for resort engineering teams; and industry leadership by setting a clear benchmark for sustainable operations in the Maldivian tourism sector. Reflecting this commitment, the group noted in a statement that at Sun Siyam, sustainability is viewed not as a standalone initiative but as a responsibility to preserve the natural beauty of the islands, support surrounding communities and operate with integrity for generations to come. The solar transformation at Siyam World Maldives and Sun Siyam Olhuveli is positioned as a key step towards a cleaner, more resilient future for the resorts and for the Maldives as a whole.
