A major step in elevating passenger service and international airline capacity was marked this week as Azerbaijan Airlines began operations from the new Terminal 1 at Velana International Airport (VIA). The airline officially commenced its use of the new terminal on Monday, bringing the total number of international carriers operating from Terminal 1 to 16. This addition underscores VIA’s continued commitment to improving travel experiences and expanding its role as a gateway for global travelers to the Maldives.
The occasion was celebrated with a warm reception, including a traditional Maldivian cultural performance to welcome the 156 passengers arriving on Azerbaijan Airlines’ inaugural flight, J2301. A ceremonial water salute greeted the aircraft upon arrival, a customary tribute to new airline operations. Of the arriving guests, 55 passengers received special commemorative gifts as part of the welcoming event.
The ceremony was attended by high-level dignitaries including Mr. Shimad Ibrahim, CEO and Managing Director of State Trading Organization (STO), British Deputy High Commissioner Mr. Mohammed Toafiq Wahab, Mr. Ahmed Arshad of Avia Maldives, and officials from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). Together, they marked the opening of Azerbaijan Airlines’ check-in counter at Terminal 1, reinforcing the strategic partnerships that support the nation’s aviation growth.
Azerbaijan Airlines has been serving the Maldives since 6 November 2024, and its integration into Terminal 1 marks a significant enhancement in passenger facilitation for travelers from the Caucasus and Central Asia. The terminal itself was developed as part of a broader effort to modernize VIA and accommodate increasing air traffic, especially during peak travel seasons when the Maldives sees a surge in tourist arrivals.
Following Azerbaijan Airlines, FlyDubai also joined the list of international carriers at Terminal 1. The Dubai-based airline became the 17th international operator at the new facility, also welcomed with a ceremonial water salute. These developments signal robust growth in international air connectivity, with Terminal 1 now playing a vital role in streamlining operations for a growing number of carriers.
As the Maldives continues to attract travelers from around the world, enhanced infrastructure at Velana International Airport ensures a seamless and memorable first impression for visitors. With its expanded capacity, improved amenities, and continued airline partnerships, Terminal 1 is helping position the Maldives as a preferred and easily accessible destination for leisure and business alike.
