Foreign visitors to the Maldives are often captivated by its turquoise waters and luxurious resorts, but now there’s another reason to admire this island nation, its expanding global mobility. According to the latest release of the Henley Passport Index in October 2025, the Maldivian passport now offers its holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 94 destinations worldwide, securing a position at 56th globally. This improved ranking places the Maldives on par with Ecuador and Timor-Leste in terms of international travel access.
The Henley Passport Index, one of the most widely recognized measures of passport power, is compiled using exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), covering 199 passports and 227 destinations. It assesses how freely citizens of each country can travel without requiring a prior visa, offering a clear picture of global mobility trends.
While Singapore leads the index with access to 193 destinations, and Malaysia and the United States share the 12th rank with 180 destinations, the Maldives’ mid-table placement showcases notable strength given its size and population. The United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates both feature in the 8th tier with 184 destinations.
Regionally, the Maldives has outperformed many of its South Asian neighbors, underlining its successful diplomatic engagements and international partnerships. India, with a population exceeding 1.4 billion, ranks 85th with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to only 57 destinations. Sri Lanka is positioned even lower at 98th with 41 destinations, while Bangladesh follows at 100th with access to just 38 destinations. In this regional context, the Maldives’ 94-destination reach is a testament to the country’s continued efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and global partnerships.
The steady climb in passport strength reflects the government’s broader foreign policy direction aimed at increasing international cooperation and mobility for its citizens. It also signals growing global confidence in the Maldives as a stable and respected member of the international community.
For tourists visiting the Maldives, this news reinforces the country’s stature not just as a luxury travel hotspot, but as an increasingly connected and diplomatically engaged nation. As the Maldives continues to refine its foreign relations and expand its global footprint, the Maldivian passport’s journey up the mobility index is expected to continue, offering further opportunities for growth and global integration.
