Once again setting its sights on international acclaim, the Maldives has secured a place among the world’s most admired destinations as it competes for two esteemed titles at the upcoming World Travel Awards (WTA) 2025: World’s Leading Destination and World’s Leading Green Destination. These nominations affirm the island nation’s enduring appeal to global travellers seeking world-class luxury, natural serenity, and authentic cultural experiences, while also recognising the country’s efforts in promoting sustainability and responsible tourism practices.

Having been crowned World’s Leading Destination for five consecutive years, the Maldives is no stranger to global recognition. Its consistent success at the WTA is a reflection of its well-earned reputation for delivering an unparalleled tourism experience, an experience defined by its pristine turquoise waters, abundant marine biodiversity, and its unique one-island-one-resort model that ensures privacy and exclusivity. From ultra-luxurious five-star resorts and charming boutique guesthouses to award-winning liveaboard cruises and immersive local experiences, the Maldives continues to cater to every type of traveller with elegance and professionalism.

The 2025 nomination for World’s Leading Green Destination further highlights the Maldives’ growing leadership in sustainable tourism. As the nation continues to confront the challenges of climate change, tourism operators across the country from large resort chains to community-run initiatives, have embraced eco-friendly practices. These include renewable energy integration, coral restoration, sustainable architecture, zero-waste initiatives, and the protection of marine areas and fragile ecosystems. Many Maldivian resorts now operate on solar power, support local sourcing, and implement marine conservation programs that engage guests in environmental stewardship.

Speaking on the recognition, Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO and Managing Director of Visit Maldives Corporation, remarked, “We are deeply honoured to once again represent the Maldives on the world stage through the World Travel Awards. These nominations reflect the dedication of everyone involved in our tourism industry, resorts, guesthouses, liveaboards, and the local communities. With the continued support of our international friends and travellers, we are confident that we can once again bring these prestigious titles home.”

The World Travel Awards, established in 1993, are globally regarded as the gold standard for excellence in the travel and hospitality sectors. They acknowledge and reward exceptional contributions across all segments of the industry, drawing millions of votes from both professionals and consumers worldwide. Winning in the global category places a destination among the top-tier tourism leaders on the planet, with a lasting impact on visitor numbers, brand reputation, and global partnerships.
