A powerful appeal for collaborative action to protect nature and culture while fostering tourism was delivered by Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim in his video address on World Tourism Day. Speaking to an international audience, the Minister emphasized that the Maldives’ success as one of the world’s premier travel destinations is inseparable from the dedication of industry stakeholders and the nation’s commitment to growth that strengthens both the economy and society.
This year’s World Tourism Day, which carries the theme of developing tourism in harmony with environmental protection, cultural preservation, and inclusive social benefits, aligned seamlessly with the Minister’s remarks. He noted that the global tourism sector generated an astounding USD 1.6 trillion in revenue last year, with forecasts projecting a 3–5 percent increase in international arrivals this year. The Maldives, already a household name for luxury and natural beauty, reflects this growth by coupling its thriving visitor numbers with strong environmental safeguards.
Minister Thoriq stressed the importance of every Maldivian citizen taking responsibility for safeguarding the nation’s pristine ecosystem and unique cultural heritage for future generations. He described sustainable tourism not just as a government priority, but as a national ethos that ensures the Maldives continues to enchant visitors while preserving what makes the islands extraordinary.
Underscoring the leadership of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening sustainable tourism policies. He highlighted plans to further expand investment in eco-conscious infrastructure, innovative hospitality solutions, and strategic marketing campaigns that present the Maldives as a model of inclusivity and sustainability.
World Tourism Day celebrations served as a timely reminder that the Maldives’ allure lies not only in its beaches and turquoise waters but also in its role as a responsible steward of nature and culture. With renewed dedication from government, industry, and citizens alike, the Maldives is determined to remain a beacon for travelers seeking authentic experiences in harmony with the environment.
